Full-Time Senior Manager, Measurement (Grantmaking)
Job Description
The Opportunity
Our Education team brings together a diverse set of technologists, grantmakers, strategists and former teachers. Our north star is to enable every young person—not just the lucky few—to enter adulthood with the knowledge, skills, habits and agency to contribute to and thrive in a changing world.
In addition to our work on the Learning Platform, the Education Program team includes a team passionate about Research to Practice. This team seeks to translate what we know about how students learn best and develop holistically into real practice – influencing how teachers teach, how students learn, how schools are run. It includes the following portfolios:
- Measures: Developing better tools to gauge the strengths and areas for growth of learning environments including how adults and students develop holistically
- Practices: Investing in the interventions, activities and practices that build learning environments that support whole child development (e.g., that help support a sense of belonging and safety)
- Capacity: Equipping teachers and school leaders with the training and resources needed to invest in and integrate standard methodologies, develop a culturally affirming and sustaining school environment and optimally supporting learning and development
This role is crafted to support the Measurement portfolio within our Research to Practice team. In this role you will establish organizational and operating strategy and parameters for measurement projects, shape proposals with external partners to achieve measurement goals, supervise the progress of such projects and problem-solve around challenges, and, more generally, build lasting links with diverse external educational and research organizations around these priorities. You will engage actively in multiple sophisticated projects with external partners for the duration of the projects (months or years), and will partner internally with CZI Education team members to drive projects forward.
Given the scope of the work planned, this person needs experience with management, strategy, communications, and operations, including thinking through financial, legal, operational, and other practical issues to bring plans to life. Since most of the resources to execute plans will be in organizations outside CZI, this person will need experience and interest in working with both internal and external partners in flexible, collaborative and insightful ways.
You will
- Collaborate with the team to integrate and operationalize a strategy for measures development
- Recommend grant opportunities to support measurement-related initiatives based on strategic fit, probability of success, and predicted size of impact
- Engage with key partners on measurement (both academic and non-academic) to refine their operational plans and goals to be realistic and achievable, with solid progress metrics towards their goals; engage with these partners from start-up, through regular communications and shared learning
- Help identify and connect grantees to supports they need to do their work better (i.e. technical assistance, broader network, other funders/funding opportunities)
- Establish relationships and integrate with other teams within CZI to collaborate and increase our collective impact
- Develop progress monitoring on key projects, to identify challenges and engage in problem-solving with project leaders
- Organize regular reporting on financial, learning, personnel, and other progress metrics from the many projects, tied with initial plans and overall strategy of CZI Research to Practice goals and metrics
- Support Director, Research to Practice Measures, in the operation of the team, including strategic course of action with the research resources, budget planning, tracking against internal goals, and operational intersections with other parts of CZI
- Approach all work with humility, thoughtfulness and an orientation toward collective impact
You have
- 5+ years of participatory and inclusive grantmaking with familiarity with measurement principles, through training/research (e.g., psychometrics)
- 7+ years handling projects and grantmaking with outstanding attention to detail – e.g. those with 10+ people –
- Able to thrive in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities both independently and within a team weaving together external organizations and individuals at varying levels
- Experience problem-solving at scale on sophisticated results in a fluid environment, with strong people management skills to ensure teams remain productive and engaged as they navigate complexity.
- Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication with the ability to build positive relationships easily and with authenticity at all levels of the organization
- Deep alignment to CZI’s mission to build a Future for Everyone!
