Full-Time Typesetting Specialist

Status: Regular Full Time
Location: 22 Adelaide Street West, Toronto (currently working remotely but will need to commute to the office when it reopens)

Job Summary:
Typesetting and design of all incoming manuscripts to a publishable format that includes both print and eBook formats according to demanding production schedules and to Harlequin quality standards. Assisting system proofreaders in their day-to-day activities in order to achieve this objective.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Print Production — 40%:
Typeset all manuscripts and prelim pages using InDesign for layout with extensive character and paragraph styles to ensure production schedules and Harlequin quality standards are met. Calculate typographical specifications according to imprint guidelines and generate the highest quality digital text file. Maintain accurate records of completion of task for manuscripts at each stage of production, including the entry of dates within the in-house tracking system.

eBook Production — 30%:
Create eBooks based on existing InDesign and manuscript Word files. This requires a working knowledge of both HTML and CSS, particularly as they apply to eBook creation.

Initial Styling — 20%:
Perform pre-styling of author Word documents as required with strict adherence to schedule deadlines and prompt turnaround of late-delivering manuscripts. Pre-styling and file conversions for book materials supplied by other external sources, i.e. 3rd party publishers from whom Harlequin may have purchased publishing rights.

Workflow Innovation — 10%:
Collaborate on the testing of future text workflow enhancements whether involving pagination, conversion or general workflow change. Keep abreast of software developments that may improve Typesetting effectiveness.

Qualifications:
Specific training and job experience required for this position includes:
• Post-secondary diploma/degree in Book Publishing
• Experience in pre-press, eBook creation and desktop publishing
• Experience in both Mac and PC platforms (job requires working on a Mac)
• Training and experience in InDesign, Acrobat, HTML, CSS, Oxygen, BBEdit, MS Word, Illustrator, ePub 2.0/3.0 and PhotoShop
