The Position

Kessel Run’s Engineering Practice Lead (“Engineering PL”) is responsible for building and growing a self-sustaining Engineering community and practice. This role will need to be opinionated about what success looks like for our engineering practice, and be able to prioritize across multiple ongoing objectives. Your day to day will evolve over time and we expect you to be the one that defines that.

What You Will Do

  • Cultivate a community of practice within Kessel Run where engineers are continuously learning from each other
  • Facilitate the collection and synthesis of feedback on behalf of engineers to identify their strengths and support their growth
  • Define expectations of technical roles within Kessel Run, and manage the process by which individuals are placed in these roles
  • Support engineering allocations decisions that promote the growth of our engineers and match their skill sets with the needs of teams
  • Lead an onboarding process for new engineers that makes them feel welcome in our community and provides them everything they need to be successful in their first three months.
  • Collaborate with Portfolio Engineering Leads to facilitate technical best practices across portfolios
  • Manage a hiring pipeline with a team of interviewers to meet the staffing needs of our product teams. Define what our hiring process should look like and adapt it as needed to meet mission needs.
  • Work with the product teams to refine how we manage incidents in production effectively
  • Work with engineers to facilitate tech talks or workshops within the community
  • Advocate for our values and practices in discussions to shape how product teams can best interface with standardized security or release procedures
  • Advocate for Kessel Run values and practices in conversations with the architecture team while they consider the aggregation of our product teams as a single system, and address risk at this scale
  • Lead and empower other engineering leads in facilitating workshops
  • Empower senior engineering practitioners to advocate for and apply best practices on their product teams
  • Generate and manage engineering practice workshops and resources to provide a repository of knowledge and practices
  • Allocate time to learn and keep up with product teams’ engineering challenges and provide guidance or facilitate discussions to resolve those challenges
  • Allocate time for self growth and keeping up with engineering practices

Who You Are

  • You are comfortable defining what success looks like for the practice, and building your own backlog
  • You actively participating in and often facilitating key Leadership ceremonies: Standup, IPM, and Retro
  • You are able to gather, synthesize, and present feedback effectively
  • You are opinionated about how to scale our engineering practice and address technical risks at the scale of the portfolio
  • You are an advocate and promoter of the way we build software at Kessel Run, especially to people external to our organization
  • You are able to talk to the Why’s behind out core practices with ease
  • You are a servant leader to your engineering practice
  • You are able to drop onto a team that is struggling with a technical issue, and create high value over a short time without being disruptive
  • You have strong opinions about what the engineering practice needs to be successful
  • You are experienced interviewing, and are excited about the opportunity to shape the future of who we have join the alliance!
  • You are a U.S. Citizen and have the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance
