Full-Time KRADOS Portfolio Design Lead

Job Description

The Kessel Run All Domain Operations Suite (KRADOS) of applications aims to bring the Air Force into a world of Continuous Airpower. By integrating and delivering over two dozen products, we will strangle out antiquated legacy systems and modernize the processes that our warfighters use today.

This KRADOS Portfolio Design Lead will initially work as part of the Mission Data Integration (MDI) Portfolio Leadership team, but may support other portfolios as we grow as an organization. They will work alongside the Portfolio Lead, Engineering Lead, Product Lead, and Portfolio Engineers to provide design guidance and advocate for the portfolio’s needs concerning design, user research, messaging, and user experience across the portfolio’s product suite.

The Design Lead is responsible for guiding design direction and supporting and supervisingdesigners.  The Design Lead is charged with enabling teams to successfully execute the KRADOS product strategy, facilitate information sharing between leadership and product teams, and work with the larger KRADOS leadership team to solve higher-level problems.  The Design Lead is also responsible for investing in the career growth of product designers and setting individual and team development goals to up-skill the design practice across the portfolio.

The Design Lead’s goal is to provide hands-on support to designers in their goal to design elegant world-class user experiences across their applications and in close coordination with the rest of the KRADOS ecosystem. A Design Lead will empower teams whenever appropriate and advocate for design-related concerns with portfolio and KRADOS leadership.

A Design Lead should have practical User Centered Design (UCD), Agile and Lean software development experience as well as a wealth of pragmatic experience with creating service blueprints and journey maps, facilitating design critiques, and developing effective user research plans and experiments. They should act as a mentor and coach, be a trusted resource for the discipline and an advocate for professional development.

Ideally, this individual has experience in facilitation and communication and opts for simplicity. They value and articulate the importance of focusing on outcomes over outputs, from strategy to implementation.

What you will do

  • Serve as a senior design professional, representing the portfolio in delivery against KRADOS vision and strategy
  • Provide guidance on strategic design goals and de-risk design decisions
  • Deconflict and unblock cross-product tracks of work so that teams can work more autonomously
  • Provide guidance on user engagement and user adoption strategies
  • Visualize and campaign progress so that teams have an understanding of what work has been accomplished and what needs to be done
  • Coordinate with other design leads for cross-portfolio work
  • Work collaboratively with teams to help them understand how to best employ UCD principles while executing on the KRADOS strategy
  • Promote communication between KRADOS Leadership and Product Teams
  • Facilitate coordination between multiple product teams to collectively problem solve for shared outcomes and consistent user experiences.
  • Collaborate with the Portfolio Leadership team on how best to achieve KRADOS OKRs and portfolio goals
  • Collaborate with KRADOS leadership to better understand our strengths and weaknesses as an organization
  • Define and lead a cadence of feedback and development initiatives to support the career growth and skill growth of product designers

Who you are

  • You have a track record of owning and driving out priorities
  • You are an expert at breaking down complex products into small, measurable components and have successfully driven an outcome-oriented roadmap to increase user adoption and quality of experience
  • You are able to influence prioritization based on the needs of users
  • You are comfortable with ambiguity and acting with incomplete information
  • You excel at facilitating meetings and often design and lead workshops
  • You are a coach and mentor and love working with others to create a community of growth-minded practitioners
  • You practice servant leadership and prioritize the development of your team
  • You have good domain context on an existing team
  • You have good written and oral communication skills
  • You are patient and persistent in getting work done
  • You have experience performing user research with multiple AOCs
  • You have served in a product liaison role at the 603rd, 609rd, or 613th.
  • You are eligible for a security clearance
  • You are comfortable with domestic and international traveling when there isn’t a pandemic
  • You actively participate in the design community (online, in-person, cross-team, workshops, etc)
  • You are able to reflect on and empathize with others perspectives
  • You have demonstrated leadership abilities in current or previous jobs
  • You are a continuous learner

We hire at the GS-13/14 level equivalent. This means you can expect a salary of $102,601 to $137,408 (depending on experience) for a Boston-based position (pay will be adjusted by location), as well as paid time off, health, and retirement benefits. There are advancement opportunities to promote to senior levels after hiring.
