Full-Time Engagement & Transformation Product Designer

Kessel Run – Posted by Kessel Run Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Job Description

Our Product Designers are breaking new ground at the Air Force, changing the way the Department of Defense builds software. We build, measure, and learn; creating war-winning software iteratively. No longer are we building off of multi-year plans with stacks of requirements.

Product Designers at Kessel Run balance user needs, organizational outcomes, and technical feasibility in order to build value quickly while still considering the big picture. Our teams are flat and balanced, with Developers, Designers, and Product Managers working in concert, empowered to build the software we know our warfighters need.

You MUST be a U.S. citizen to apply and must be eligible to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (see eligibility requirements here).

Day In The Life

A typical day as a Kessel Run Technical Product Designer starts with a team stand-up to align on goals for the day. As a Technical Product Designer you will test your product assumptions by

researching your product space, conducting user interviews and developing prototypes. You’ll work to keep the team unblocked by providing designs and supporting artifacts in the backlog while being flexible and adaptable to a fast-changing environment. You’ll ensure clear communication with the team, leadership, users and stakeholders throughout the design process.

You will serve the needs of teams who build machine-to-machine services and enable data to flow between various Kessel Run and external applications. You will practice User-Centered Design (UCD) and research, then expend further effort to optimize for the whole and make sure that your product is helping Kessel Run accomplish big picture objectives.

The Engagement and Transformation Portfolio specifically manages both legacy AF systems as well as products modernizing our current warfighting ecosystem. Ensuring our technology is able to coexist alongside older systems and databases is key to achieving the future state of Air Operations for our joint users. This will require taking into account multiple organizations needs and prioritizing the right subset of work to drive mission success.

Who You Are

  • You lead design on your product team across the entire product lifecycle (everything from discovering and defining the problem to iterating on a product in production)
  • You define the vision for the user experience and involve teammates in the design process
  • You advocate for user value and balance that against business value, portfolio value, and
  • technical complexity
  • You work with your team to define product vision, strategy, roadmap, and backlog
  • You seek user feedback constantly while balancing when you can build in risk
  • You collaborate with your Engineers and build artifacts that enable the team to move fast
  • You audit your application behavior and generate artifacts so that others easily understand how your application will respond in machine-to-machine interactions
  • Support user research trips working with warfighters all around the world
  • You have a technical background and/or a fondness for knowing how things work “under the hood” in the software industry
  • You know what purpose an Application Programming Interface (API) serves
  • You understand the basic principles of User-Centered Design (UCD) and user research processes
  • You have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • You are comfortable traveling to meet users and stakeholders and can represent both the team and Kessel Run during work trips
  • You have a growth mindset and love working in a fast-paced agile environment
  • You are a U.S. citizen and are eligible to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (see eligibility requirements here)

We hire at GS-13 equivalent levels. This means you can expect a salary of $101,585 to $132,064 (depending on experience) for a Boston-based position (pay will be adjusted by location), as well as paid time off, health, and retirement benefits. There are advancement opportunities to promote to senior levels after hiring.

We understand that there is no such thing as the ideal candidate for any job and we believe in empowering people to learn and grow throughout their careers. We encourage any applicant who is interested in making an impact in the Department of Defense to apply to this position regardless of background and qualifications.
