The Upper Division Advising Center at Ball State University welcomes applications for the position of Academic Advisor from individuals who are passionate about helping undergraduate students discover their unique strengths, interests, and purpose. Working under the direction of an Academic Advising Coordinator, the candidate will manage an assigned caseload of students to provide comprehensive academic advising that supports business majors pursuing campus-based degree programs in Muncie, Indiana.

 

The Academic Advisor will assist the Department of Accounting, Department of Economics, and the Department of Information Systems and Operations Management and will guide students in understanding their degree requirements, academic policies, and university procedures to make informed decisions within their degree program.

 

The Academic Advisor will also interpret Miller College of Business and Ball State University policies and procedures regarding enrollment, major selection, course sequencing, and degree requirements. Academic Advisors at Ball State University will utilize student development and retention theories to enhance advising practice, serve as a contact person and academic resource for new, prospective, and continuing students seeking a business degree in Accounting, Economics, and Business Analytics, and actively participate in annual student events such as Orientation, Transfer Visit Day, and Preview Day.

 

This position will serve as the primary academic advisor to approximately 350 – 450 upper-division students holding academic majors in the Miller College of Business (MCOB); support students in understanding and meeting academic requirements; assist students in maintaining state-mandated four-year degree maps; promote strategies for student success; advise transfer students on program requirements and course equivalencies; serve as a referral agent to other university services; facilitate communication between assigned students and all MCOB departments; participate in appropriate events as requested by all the Departments in MCOB, the Office of Admissions, and the Office of Orientation.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Master’s degree by date of appointment. One year of experience in academic advising, student services, counseling, or related field. Ability to work effectively with faculty, administration, and undergraduate students; ability to work in a collaborative environment and work independently; sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student population; interpersonal/human relations skills; ability to encourage and empower students to make their own decisions; ability to act as an advocate for both the student and the university; ability to identify students’ needs for support services in order to make appropriate referrals; ability to maintain confidentiality.

 

Candidates for searches must have current authorization to be employed in the U.S. without employer sponsorship.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree in student affairs, accounting, economics, business analytics, or related area. Experience in a higher education environment; familiarity with Ball State curriculum; familiarity with Banner, Degree Works, and Aviso.
