Full-Time Customs Assistant Officer

HM Revenue & Customs – Posted by HMRC Hayes, England, United Kingdom

Job Description

At HMRC we’re committed to getting tax right, for everyone.

We’re all doing our bit to make a difference, whether that’s helping customers pay their tax and claim financial support or making it hard for the dishonest minority to cheat the system.

We couldn’t do all this without our dedicated and very important workforce. We’re one of the largest organisations in the UK, and we pride ourselves on our diverse and inclusive working culture.

As a Customs Assistant Officer you will work in a responsible administrative role in close partnership with UK Border Force to tackle customs fraud and protect the UK economy.

You will investigate and carry out checks on a wide range of goods imported into the UK suspected of being undervalued, incorrectly described or counterfeit.

Good administrative skills and proven written and oral skills will enable you to effectively document and communicate the outcome of your investigations.

You will be part of a Customs Fraud Investigation team, using powers and appropriate legislation to protect legitimate trade and take targeted action against those who seek to gain an unfair advantage through breaking the rules.

Your responsibilities will include conducting checks taking product samples, raising demands and penalties, seizing illicit goods, working with Border Force and maintaining records and databases.

Working Patterns

The team operate across a 7-day week and you will be employed on a 5 over 7 contract. This means you will be expected to work 5 days out of 7 days covering various working patterns, usually 37 hours per week. This includes weekends, evenings (up to 7pm) and some bank holidays. Entitlement to unsocial hours pay may be allowable if the working hours are considered unsocial by HMRC.

You don’t need any existing knowledge or experience of Customs or tax in order to apply, but we are looking for the following skills and personal qualities:

Professional, confident and adaptable communicators – equally effective in oral and written communication.

Team player – able to work effectively with colleagues across HMRC and other government agencies.

Well organised – able to manage a workload effectively, deadline focussed, able to reprioritise as demands change.

Eager to learn – you will need to learn and keep current the tax legislation and practical skills relevant to your role. This knowledge will help support your investigative work when carrying out checks on imported goods.

Creative and committed to continuous improvement – in an environment where performance matters.

Thorough – you do things the right way, you’re comprehensive in your approach to keep detailed records of your actions and your decisions.

Willing to perform physical tasks – you will undertake manual handling activities such as lifting, pushing, pulling and moving items throughout the course of your working day.

A full UK driving licence is also required.
