Movement Consultation Specialist

Summary

The Wikimedia Foundation is looking for a Movement Consultation Specialist to join our team, reporting to the Senior Program Manager, Communications. As the Movement Consultation Specialist, you will be responsible for holding the role of staff coach in our Movement Consultation team. In this role, the Consultation team’s purpose is to help Foundation staff run outstanding consultations with stakeholders from across our volunteer communities. The team contributes expertise, resources, and support to further the Foundation’s overall consultation vision and philosophy (as outlined in the Foundation Consultation Guide). The Consultation team is responsible for maintaining a set of consultation tools, providing training and support to staff, helping to coordinate beneficial consultations across teams and departments, ensuring consistent and effective implementation of best practices, working in concert with the rest of the Movement Consultation team to set a vision for consistent, innovative and inclusive consultations across  the Foundation, and increasing community-informed culture.

You are responsible for:

  • Coaching. Provide interactive training and positive support, beginning early on in the consultation design process. Answer questions, help with troubleshooting, and level-up a community of practice across the Foundation.
  • Knowledge production. Work across the Foundation to explore and refine existing practices, develop new processes and frameworks that help staff and community to plan, run, and close the loop on consultations. Iterate and improve these processes and approaches  through regular retrospectives.
  • Organizational capacity building. Strengthen knowledge of and capacity to engage with Wikimedia’s diverse volunteer ecosphere across the Foundation. Design and run trainings for new and existing staff. Teach colleagues how to fish.
  • Evaluation & Learning. Work with Foundation colleagues and the individual communities that make up the Movement to establish standards of practice that result in shareable best practices.  Define and implement consultation success metrics informed by community feedback. Share and apply lessons learned internally (from our own consultations) and externally (what others are doing).
  • Thought leadership. Work to help the Foundation’s teams improve their understanding of and approach to radically open, effective, and equitable consultations
  • Organizational realignment. Work with teams across the Foundation to promote use of best practice as well as a broader shift in culture and priorities toward genuine, equitable, and informative consultations.

Skills and Experience:

  • 5+ years experience collaborating in complex situations in a professional setting
  • Ability to build relationships and trust, influence without authority, and effortlessly enforce accountability

Qualities that are important to us:

  • Being open, curious, and inquiring in our work
  • Internal motivation and high standards
  • Working together for outcomes, and being willing to let go to scale or change course

  • Natural inclination for team collaboration and for helping colleagues succeed

Additionally, we’d love it if you have:

  • Experience collaborating with communities and creating shared agreements
  • Experience working in an international organization that has a distributed workforce and a very strong culture
  • Experience in Africa, India, East Asia, or the Middle East is a huge plus
