Full-Time Street Maintenance Worker

Job Description

This is an entry level position involved in a variety of manual labor tasks requiring some specialized skill in general construction and maintenance activities associated with maintaining the streets and storm sewers, operating of light duty construction and maintenance equipment, and other related duties as assigned.

Assignments are usually received in the form of orders to accomplish a specific task, pick-up and deliver material or personnel, or drive according to an established route. Work is performed independently, but under the supervision of a Supervisor or assigned crew leader, and is reviewed through observation by a Supervisor during progress and upon completion considering results attained.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Safe and efficient operation of equipment (25%): Small utility tractors, sewer cleaning equipment, water pumps, skid steers, tractor backhoes, hydraulic excavators, light, medium and heavy duty end-loaders, asphalt pavers, melter applicators, light, medium and heavy duty rollers, road oilers, concrete saws, mowers, chain saws, road saws and similar equipment. Conduct pre-operational checks on equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs to equipment to include changing tires, cleaning, lubricating and fueling equipment as necessary, and reporting discrepancies to supervisory personnel.
• Assist dig out crew (13%): Operate concrete breaker, road saw/cutoff saw, shovel, rake and compact, repair sanitary and storm sewer leads and mains.
• Assist concrete crew (13%): Shovel, rake, road saw/cut off saw, hammer drill/gang drill, form, pour, finish, strike off, and broom.
• Assist build crew (13%): Build sewer structures, operate crane, repair sanitary and storm sewer leads, mortar tender, operate mixer and compressor.
• Assist asphalt crew (13%): Asphalt patch, route, wire wheel, crack seal/fill, pave, lute, shovel, roll, and road saw/cutoff saw.
• Assist with storm water maintenance activities (13%): Clear storm ditches and drain pipes, control invasive weeds, trim/remove weeds, remove trash/debris, and mow.
• Assist in winter operations (10%): Snow and ice control, salt and brine application.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:
• Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of materials and equipment used on construction sites such as pneumatic, power and hand tools, rakes, shovels, chain saws, brush chippers, mixers, routers, compactors, power concrete screeds, air compressors, and similar equipment and tools.
• Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment.
• Ability to perform assigned tasks in a safe, efficient and timely manner with minimum supervision and with sufficient skill to recognize potential problems or difficult situations that require further supervisory instruction or consent.
• Familiarity with road construction supplies used to repair and maintain asphalt and concrete pavement, sidewalks, curbing, sewer manholes and inlets.
• Thorough awareness and understanding regarding the safe use of chemicals and other materials, regarding applicable safety practices and procedures specific to labor work including OSHA standards, and regarding the use of safety and protective equipment.
• Ability to work in adverse or hazardous weather conditions.
• Ability to safely do ladder work.
• Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees and the public; ability to handle situations in a courteous and tactful manner.
• Ability to work effectively with fellow co-workers and crews to produce desired outcomes.
• Ability to multi-task and set priorities effectively to meet established deadlines.
• Ability to accomplish goals in a team environment.
• Ability to be accurate and pay attention to detail.
• Ability to be a self-starter and work confidently on your own or as part of a team.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Some overhead lifting is required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outside in adverse weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical equipment/parts and is frequently exposed to wet, cold and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in elevated, precarious places and may occasionally be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment may occasionally exceed 75dBA. Hearing protection is required in areas exceeding 85 dBA.
