Full-Time Associate Director, National Development

Who You Are

The Associate Director, National Development manages New Leaders’ national funder pipeline and portfolio in direct support of the team’s revenue goal. The Associate Director, National Development partners with the Executive Director, National Development (“Executive Director”), Chief External Relations Officer (“CERO”), and senior leaders across the organization to cultivate champions and secure funding from a robust and diverse portfolio of investors in New Leaders’ mission. The Associate Director, National Development reports to the Executive Director, National Development.

 

Specific Responsibilities  

Portfolio Management

  • Partner with the Executive Director to develop New Leaders’ fundraising strategy to meet annual goals and long-term financial sustainability objectives.
  • Lead the management of the national development funder pipeline, portfolio, and path to goal, including prospect research, stewardship, grant management, and quarterly/annual planning; manage across to peers and up to senior leaders and executives to move work forward.
  • Prepare detailed and up-to-date research briefings on prospects and/or groups of prospects for development staff and organizational leadership in advance of meetings and events.
  • Provide ad-hoc development support to steward local and national donors as needed.

Systems and Structures

  • Build and implement systems to ensure the national development team’s work runs smoothly, and deliverables are on time or ahead of schedule.
  • Lead cross-functional initiatives to define national development data collection and tracking needs and design tools and strategies to support funder pipeline management and progress to goals monitoring.
  • Create and manage the timeline, reporting approaches, and communications structures to regularly update leadership regarding all aspects of national development.

Writing and External Reporting   

  • Serve as a lead writer to create high quality, compelling written communications that convey New Leaders’ current and intended impact—including qualitative and quantitative data—in a way that is inspiring and tailored to our funders’ interests.
  • Partner with teams across the organization to track and gather information that will be used to craft proposals and reports while ensuring compliance and alignment with funder requirements.
  • Build strong internal relationships and liaise with finance, program, evaluation, policy, legal, and other teams to create written materials.
  • Work independently to gather, evaluate, and synthesize information from internal stakeholders for donor content creation (e.g., concept papers, proposals, and meeting follow-up), managing up and across for input and feedback on work products.

Project Management  

  • Coordinate projects and initiatives as needed that support team and organizational goals.
  • Track progress on various activities and goals that are high priority for the team.

  • Exemplary technical and creative writing skills with the ability to interpret and distill information to produce compelling written products.
  • Outcomes-oriented with a track record of meeting/surpassing goals and operating with purpose, urgency, nimbleness, and accuracy in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Strong project management, analytical, organization, problem-solving and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams in parallel and the motivation to build relationships with colleagues and to manage sideways and up to move work forward.
  • Outstanding computer skills, including fluency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency in research and information acquisition, including use of online and electronic sources and print directories.
  • Data management and prospect research experience (including familiarity with tools such as WealthEngine and RelSci and systems like Salesforce and Qlik) a plus.
  • Must be able to travel up to 3-5 times annually (temporarily suspended).
  • Familiarity with instruction, pedagogy, and curriculum in underperforming schools a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • At least six years of professional experience required; at least two years of relevant sales or fundraising experience preferred.
