Position Description
Bard High School Early College – Manhattan, a partnership between Bard College and the New York City Department of Education, invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Biology, beginning immediately for this Fall 2024 and Spring 2025 with the possibility to continue. BHSEC, a national model in the field of public school reform, enables talented and highly motivated students to move in four years from the ninth grade through the first two years of college, earning an Associate of Arts degree from Bard College as well as a high school diploma. The academic program emphasizes small class size and a commitment to teaching a diverse student body.
BHSEC Manhattan implements a “Physics First” curriculum, offering a conceptual Physics course in ninth grade, Chemistry in tenth grade, and then General Biology in the first year of the college program. Nearly all students elect to take at least one semester of science in the second year of the college program. The successful applicant will teach three sections of a college lab-based introductory biology course as well as the future possibility of substituting a teaching college science electives in your area of expertise.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Participate in curriculum development.
- Commitment to regular and ongoing professional development.
- Commitment to working with students individually and in small groups through tutoring, office hours and advising outside of regular class time.
- Communicate regularly with administrators, parents and other stakeholders about student progress and engagement.
- Participate fully in the life of the school, including student advising, club advising, and committee service.

Start Date: September 2024
Duration: One year with the possibility of converting to an ongoing position
Compensation: The compensation for teaching these classes is based on the NYC DOE salary scale found on this page: https://www.uft.org/your-rights/salary/doe-and-city-salary-schedules/teacher-salary-schedule
The position may be funded by either Bard College or the NYC Department of Education. Hiree must be fully authorized to work in the U.S. for a September 2024 start date. If you would like to be considered for a 2025 start date instead, please indicate that in your cover letter.
Qualifications
- The successful candidate will be capable of teaching a college lab-based biology course as well as college science electives in their area of expertise.
- A Masters or Doctorate in biology, or a related field in the biological sciences is required.
- New York State teaching certification will be needed; assistance in securing certification will be provided to the successful candidate, if necessary.
- We seek teachers and scholars deeply committed to their field and creative in engaging students at both the college and high school levels with its delights and challenges.
- The ideal candidate will be a skilled educator with a demonstrated interest in engaging and challenging younger students with diverse racial backgrounds, economic backgrounds, and a variety of approaches to learning and/or needs for learning supports
- The ideal candidate will have an interest in working with high school age students who are completing a college-level course of study
- The ideal candidate will demonstrate a continued interest in the ongoing work in their field
- The ideal candidate will understand cultural difference and purposefully help to uplift ideas from underrepresented groups to improve the equity balance in education
- The ideal candidate will have a commitment to advancing equity through rigorous curricula made accessible to students with varied academic backgrounds
- Preference will be given to those candidates who have earned a Ph.D. in their field and have both college and high school teaching experience
