Are you passionate about environmental sustainability, net zero initiatives and looking for a new opportunity where you can make a real impact? We are looking for a highly collaborative, people-oriented Net Zero Manager who has proven experience developing and implementing net zero pathways and expertise in the broader sustainability field.

UKCEH is making strides in advancing our efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainability, yet we recognise the importance of boosting our capacity to achieve our ambitious Net Zero targets. As such, we are seeking to expand our Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE) Team and recruit a Net Zero Manager to bolster our ability to successfully deliver on our Net Zero goals to achieve:

  • Net Zero across Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions by 2040
  • Net Zero across Scope 3 GHG emissions by 2050

This is an exciting opportunity to join our passionate, highly collaborative, and growing team, who are at the forefront of building our capability to meet the needs of the organisation and our stakeholders now and into the future.

Within this role you will assist our Head of SHE and support our strategic champions, developing and implementing your ideas by fostering positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to help drive our vision forward through the delivery of our strategy and delivery plans. This is a new position within UKCEH, which is why it will initially function independently. For this reason, it is therefore essential that you are comfortable and confident working autonomously and enjoy a hands-on approach. Whilst you will work in a standalone capacity, you will receive the full support from the Environmental Advisor and broader SHE team and have plenty of opportunities to attend events, seminars, and courses to further your personal development and career aspirations.

In collaboration with our Environmental Advisor, you will work closely with colleagues throughout the organization and external key stakeholders. Your role will involve aligning net zero objectives with UKCEH’s broader environmental goals and Science Strategy, supporting initiatives in resource management, circular economy principles, biodiversity net gain, and more.

Finally, you will partner with colleagues in our Estates team and external stakeholders to identify and implement decarbonisation opportunities, utilising BMS data analysis and developing business case proposals. Working in partnership with our Communications & Engagement team, you will develop and implement effective communication plans that drive engagement and influence organisational culture.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Develop and drive UKCEH’s Net Zero Pathway, strategy and associated plans, including methodology for project-based carbon accounting and analysis of climate change risks & opportunities
  • Implement and report on our science-based targets for carbon reduction and achieving Net Zero, and seek opportunities to improve our carbon reduction plan
  • Explore and recommend as appropriate, carbon offsetting and insetting opportunities
  • Deliver training on carbon reduction and net zero to internal stakeholders if required
  • Align with or achieve ISO standards or certifications as appropriate – e.g. ISO 14064 3:2019, Carbon Trust/SBTi certifications
  • Develop and implement a suitable audit programme & schedule
  • Undertake internal and external carbon reporting, and supporting tasks, to ensure compliance with SECR, ESOS, TCFD etc. and wider sustainability reporting and networking as appropriate

Given the demands of this type of role, we are looking for a collaborative professional who thrives in demanding and complex environments. You will have highly developed skills in partnership working at strategic levels and ability to deal professionally across all levels of the organisation with a range of often conflicting views, working collaboratively to agree priorities and achieve shared outcomes.

You should exhibit high levels of self-motivation and purpose, demonstrating resilience in navigating challenges. The capacity to overcome obstacles and effectively persuade others will be integral to success in this role. Additionally, proficiency in analytical thinking, innovative problem-solving, and the adeptness to make challenging decisions with ease will play a pivotal role in advancing our ambitious sustainability objectives.

In return, you’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.

For the role of Net Zero Manager, we’re looking for somebody who has:

  • A related degree or appropriate work experience in the Net Zero/sustainability space
  • Has the passion and proven experience of developing and implementing strategies, driving initiatives and managing projects through to successful delivery
  • Strong analytical and numeracy skills for data analysis and Net Zero reporting
  • Good communication and influencing skills with the ability to inspire and support cultural transformation, with experience of business case development
  • Excellent self-motivation and tenacity, effectively coordinating activities and priorities to meet project deadlines and is resilient under pressure
  • A willingness to travel to other sites in the UK

If we’ve just described you, we’d love to meet. Apply now.
