Full-Time Paralegal – Real Estate Tax Assessment (RETA)

If you’re a Paralegal who is passionate about your career, then you will want to join the team-oriented Real Estate Tax Assessment group at Thompson Coburn LLP.  We currently have a non-exempt position available for a full-time Paralegal with at least three (3) years of experience in Real Estate Tax Assessment. This position will support a fast-paced department which requires excellent organizational skills and requires the ability to prioritize tasks. Qualified applicants will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Paralegal Studies or Associate’s Degree and Paralegal certificate.  After an initial period of training, this position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the administration of property tax appeals, including the timely preparation and filing of appropriate complaints and supporting evidence at three administrative levels as well as in the Circuit Courts.
  • Analyzes properties, reviews and drafts briefs and all supporting evidence for residential, income producing and owner-occupied properties including real estate development projects from demolition to completion for new construction, building rehabs and condo conversions.
  • Understands and interprets assessment records, assessment histories and other relevant documentation common in the practice.
  • Monitors and assists with complaint preparation for tax objection cases filed in the Circuit Court of Cook County as well as court call management and document production.
  • Engages with clients effectively through written and verbal communication, drafting concise correspondence to summarize appeal outcomes and recommendations. Proactively requests and follows up for necessary data while addressing questions and concerns related to pending appeals, new properties, and other diverse matters.

Experience and Education Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree (or higher) or a Paralegal Certification required. Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Substantial equivalent experience in Real Estate Tax Assessment will be considered in lieu of education.
  • At least three (3) years of experience in Real Estate Tax Assessment practice area preferred.
