Duty Manager

What is the key purpose of this role?

To manage Operations Control to ensure all train movements meet customer requirements. To manage real time disruption to NTS RAIL train movements to minimise the impact felt by the customer and remediate efficiently and effectively in achieving normal train running at the earliest opportunity. To act as the single point of contact for the business during times of serious disruption.

What do I need to excel in this role?

Candidates for this role should be able to demonstrate the following:

Qualification

  • Knowledge and qualification in a vocational or specialist field short of a degree level. For example, HNC/HND (NVQ4)

Experience

  • Significant experience in Rail operations
  • Operating TOPS
  • Managing several different complex tasks simultaneously

Knowledge

  • Rules of the route
  • Significant route knowledge
  • Legislative and Standards awareness relating to the role
  • Significant geographical knowledge of the network

Skills and Attributes

  • Excellent Leadership qualities
  • The ability to effectively manage a team
  • The ability to manage change effectively
  • IT Skills: Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Sage

What are the key deliverables and accountabilities of the role?

Key areas

  • Produce a daily 24-hour Control Log of events and issue to the business at the agreed time
  • To effectively manage delivery of all planned elements of NTS RAIL Train Operations through a Control Room function
  • To manage a team co-ordinating real time utilisation of fleet and train crew resources where deviation from the plan is required
  • To manage service disruption recovery & incident recovery
  • To manage all real time utilisation of fleet and train crew resources.
  • Appropriate, efficient & effective real time communication with all NTS RAIL stakeholders in order the customer receives the service which is commensurate with NTS RAIL service provision
  • To identify and propose to the Resourcing and Planning Managers any changes where efficiency in traincrew or fleet deployment can be realised
  • To manage real-time capture of changes to the roster and provide the information to the resourcing team efficiently to aid the process
  • To manage records produced and held by the department in providing auditable evidence for the company to meet the requirements of the company’s BMS and ISO accreditation
  • To identify and implement continual departmental improvement, both procedural and structural to meet the business demands and growth
  • To assist in the long-term planning process by providing technical and operational knowledge
  • Ensure Controller/Assistant Controller rosters are complete with all shifts covered from within the team. This includes additional hours during RHTT periods
  • To assist the overall function in ensuring that integration of new business is delivered in the most effective and efficient way possible
