Salary – £37,405 to £39,694
Fully Site Based
Permanent and Full-Time (37 hours per week). We are able to consider part-time and flexible working for this opportunity, it would need to be equivalent to 4 full days.

You’ll be joining a well-established and supportive team, working in world-class laboratories.  Using cutting-edge analytical instruments, methods, and sample preparation capacity, to conduct high-quality and innovative analytical data.  (UKAS-accredited to ISO17025:2017).

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced analytical chemist with expertise in inorganic analyses (namely in metal analyses) to develop new methodologies, coordinate and manage workflows as well as conducting inorganic analyses in a wide range of environmental samples, for numerous projects exploring a broad range of environmental questions. To address new environmental questions, we need novel methodologies and approaches.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • All aspects of the inorganic chemical analysis of environmental samples
  • Developing methods for metal and nutrient analyses, including instrument validation and the writing of SOPs
  • Overseeing the data quality generated, when required
  • Providing, or leading the provision of, data and methodological text, to several significant outputs each year, which could include: peer refereed publications or customer reports; presentations or book chapters
  • Training and supervising the laboratory team
  • Carrying out laboratory management duties, including taking responsibility for lab safety and COSHH compliance
  • Instrument troubleshooting and maintenance, including liaising with manufacturers, and selection of new instruments
  • Working within the laboratory’s quality system and ISO 17025, including delegated responsibility for managing inorganic non-conforming work investigations and conducting internal audits
  • Purchasing of general equipment and reagents
  • Helping to deliver the science of environmental pollution by collaborating in the research, as well as writing and presenting the findings
  • Over time, the role could develop to include more senior managerial responsibilities

 

 

For the role of Inorganic Analytical Chemist, we’re looking for somebody who has:

 

  • A degree (2:1 or above) in Environmental Chemistry and demonstrable experience in an accredited laboratory
  • Proven experience in environmental chemical analyses
  • Working knowledge on ICP-MS, ICP-OES and XRF
  • The ability to successfully prepare a wide range of environmental samples
  • The ability to produce well regarded, high-quality and reproducible data
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365, especially Excel and instrument specific software packages
  • An aptitude for solving complex problems, self-motivated, and confident to ask for help when required, maintaining open communication with the senior team
  • Evidence of continuing professional development, with an enthusiasm for the subject, demonstrating up to date knowledge of the field
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
  • A responsible approach to working sustainably
  • Experience of being in a supervisory or training position
