Job Description

The City of Worcester is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Branch Youth Services Librarian (Graduate Librarian Gr. 2) for the Worcester Public Library. This is a graduate librarian position under the immediate supervision of the Manager of Youth Branch Services and under the general direction of the Deputy Director of Youth Services. The Youth Services Librarian will have a passion for elementary-aged children’s programming and collection management. This position works within our One City, One Library branches, located within four (4) elementary schools throughout the Worcester, to develop and implement engaging library programs, collections and services, and connects children and families with the information they seek. The ideal person in this position will possess excellent organization, interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills and have experience working with diverse populations in an urban community. Schedule will include evenings and weekend hours and working at other locations.

ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS:

  • Develop, plan, implement, and evaluate programs for children, parents, and caregivers that meet the expressed and anticipated needs of the community’s diverse population
  • Make connections, conduct outreach, and represent the library in the community, particularly promoting children’s services and collections
  • Provide exemplary reference and reader’s advisory services for children, young adults, parents, teachers, and other adults; looks for opportunities to help library customers feel welcome
  • Build, manage and promote extraordinary youth collections in various formats that are diverse, current and relevant to the needs of the community
  • Maintain a working knowledge of library resources for youth and an awareness of new resources and technologies and effectively use and teach library resources
  • Collaborate with professional and paraprofessional staff and with other city agencies and organizations
  • Stay informed of professional and community developments affecting the library and librarianship
  • Interpret library services and policies to patrons in a clear and courteous manner
  • Contribute to create an environment oriented to trust, open communication, creative thinking, and cohesive team effort
  • Actively participate in staff development and training opportunities
  • Train, supervise and evaluate branch volunteers

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Understand library patrons and excel when connecting youth, parents, students, and adults who work with children with library resources by demonstrating knowledge of search skills using paper and electronic resources
  • Commitment to outstanding public service for children and families providing an exemplary patron experience
  • Ability to organize and self-direct work responsibly
  • Collaborate and foster positive working relationships with a diverse staff
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and the ability to communicate with staff and patrons about concepts, ideas, and requirements
  • Strong commitment to consistent excellent customer service to a diverse population in an urban environment
  • High level of professionalism and commitment to the organization
  • Embrace opportunities to learn in a fast-paced changing environment
  • Demonstrate proficiency in current and emerging technologies
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Knowledge of the principles and correct usage of the English language including grammar, punctuation, and spelling
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree in Library Science or Library and Information Science, including graduate credit in children’s services, from a library school accredited by the American Library Association or approved by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners
  • Must have access to reliable transportation and the ability to travel to required locations in a timely manner
  • Ability to successfully pass CORI/SORI
  • Excellent communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two (2) years of experience providing services to children
  • Prior customer service experience in a public library
  • Prior experience with programming for children

SALARY RANGE: $27.85 – $36.36 hourly, full-time, excellent benefits package.
