The Department of General Services, The Division of Facilities Management (DFM) delivers operational and mission critical services 24 hours a day seven days a week on behalf of County residents and Montgomery County Government. DFM manages over 400 County buildings, ensuring they are maintained at the highest level to provide a comfortable environment for employees and the public.

About the Position:
The Department of General Services, Division of Facility Management, currently has a vacancy for the position of Electrician I. The successful applicant will be expected to be a licensed journeyman electrician in good standing in State of Maryland. This employee will be responsible for performing skilled and hazardous electrical work and will be able to plan and lay out the work to be done, including the selection of proper tools, parts, equipment and materials. This employee is responsible for ensuring safe and effective operation of electrical systems in County facilities and the safety and comfort of facility users.

The incumbent of this position must:

  • Have knowledge of the makeup, operation and installation of a variety of electrical systems, circuits, equipment and controls common to Montgomery County Government facilities and structures
  • Demonstrated experience in the installation and repair of electrical equipment, i.e., switching/distribution/transfer panels, run above and below grade wiring, connecting, transformers, outlets, interior/exterior light fixtures, replays, testing, utility motors, controls, standby generators, etc.
  • Have experience interpreting technical documentation on as built and electrical schematic drawings.
  • Have experience applying the National Electrical Code and revisions and the local building and fire codes related to the work performed within the electrician trade.
  • Have experience using hand tools and test equipment such as wire cutters and strippers, drills, soldering irons, screwdrivers, test meters, test lamps, voltmeters, ammeters, watt meters and ohmmeters.

This is journey level work involving the installation, modification, repair, troubleshooting, loading, and testing of new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment. Contacts generally are with shop employees within and outside the electrical trade, but on occasion may include contractors or agency personnel responsible for facility maintenance for the purpose of providing and receiving instructions and information. An incumbent offers limited direct service or assistance to the public. Employee is required to respond to after-hours emergency service calls and may be placed on stand-by duty during severe weather or other urgent conditions.

SOME WORK IS CARRIED OUT AFTER NORMAL WORKING HOURS AND ON WEEKENDS. EMPLOYEE MUST BE AVAILABLE TO WORK ALL HOURS. This is a 24/7-hour operation requiring some shift work to support routine to emergency electrical service. This position requires outdoor and indoor job assignments including operating repairs under vertical lifts and bucket trucks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience: Completion of a recognized Apprentice Electrician program
Education: Completion of high school or High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

LICENSE:

  • Possession of a journey level electrician’s license issued by the Montgomery County Board of Electrical Examiners.
  • Possession and maintenance at all times of a valid Class “C” (or equivalent) driver’s license from the applicant’s state of residence.

PREFERRED CRITERIA
There are NO Preferred Criteria Assessments. All applicants will be reviewed by OHR for minimum qualifications. Those applicants who meet minimum qualifications will be rated Qualified, placed on the Eligible List, and may be considered for an interview. Employees meeting minimum qualifications who are same grade or higher will be placed on Eligible List as a Transfer candidate and may be considered for an interview.
