Full-Time Communications and Public Relations Manager

ROLE

You would play a crucial role in developing and telling the story of Marine Conservation Institute’s conservation impact. As Communications & PR Manager you will have the opportunity to build a brand that will create strong societal impact and result in marine conservation. In this role you will develop and implement an integrated communications strategy, working with our senior staff and board of directors to advance our conservation efforts and improve our name recognition. A primary focus will be promoting and growing our Blue Parks program, which provides blueprints for establishing effective marine protected areas, incentivizes conservation excellence, and unites the ocean’s best protected places in a strategic network to save life in the sea. This is a leadership role within the organization, contributing to the successful articulation and achievement of program, policy and fundraising goals. This position reports directly to the president of Marine Conservation Institute.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Develop and implement a strategic communications plan focused on our major initiatives and conservation goals, coordinating with key international events and other significant organizational milestones.
  • Grow support for the Blue Parks initiative, coordinate outreach with the Blue Parks Director and Ambassadors, and promote nominees and award winners.
  • Advise organizational leadership on communications topics and opportunities.
  • Develop and execute earned and digital media strategies, creating and amplifying compelling, positive stories about our organization and initiatives.
  • Implement measurable goals and evaluation frameworks for campaigns, track progress, and adjust as needed to meet established objectives.
  • Develop and contribute to compelling messages and talking points in a variety of media (press releases, blogs, op-eds, etc.).
  • Manage Marine Conservation Institute’s website and social media accounts, ensuring the consistency of our brand and our strategic imperative of equity, diversity, inclusion and justice in all communications.
  • Support engagement with our partners on strategic communications.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with media in domain-specific and general interest publications.
  • Track media coverage and archive clips & summaries for reference and reuse.

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE and SKILLS

  • 3+ years of experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or journalism, particularly in nonprofit, mission-driven and conservation spaces.
  • Demonstrated success in strategic communications and advocacy, including monitoring and evaluating outcomes.
  • Ability to maintain strong and productive relationships with media, partners and other stakeholders.
  • Ability to communicate complex and technical information clearly to different audiences.
  • Demonstrated success in procuring positive news coverage in a multitude of media outlets (non-English and international outlets a plus).
  • Exceptional writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Excellent management skills and the ability to juggle multiple projects & deadlines.
  • Excellent judgment, with a solid understanding of how to navigate online communication and when (and whether) to engage with topics, campaigns, or social media “moments.”
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create and edit short videos.
  • Ability and availability to travel overnight 2-3 times a year, including weekends and international travel.
  • Positive, solution-oriented attitude.
  • An eye for aesthetics and branding.
  • Proactive and self-motivated.
  • Ability to be highly successful in a virtual/remote environment.
  • Commitment to an organizational culture and structure that fosters cooperation, communication, collaboration, teamwork, equity and trust.

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS

The starting salary for this position ranges from $50,000 to $65,000 per year. Starting pay may vary with job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. At present, our total compensation package for benefits-eligible employees includes 401(k), employer-paid medical, dental, and vision, 15 days of paid vacation, 12 paid holidays and sick leave. Please note that Marine Conservation Institute, at its discretion, may make changes to its benefits programs from time to time.
