SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. LWTech offers ten applied bachelor’s degrees, more than 40 associate degrees and 93 professional certificates, in 43 areas of study, including STEM-focused programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. LWTech serves the Eastside and is located within the city of Kirkland, which is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Washington. Summary of ResponsibilitiesThe TRIO advisor will plan and implement TRIO program initiatives including support services such as academic planning , career guidance, referral to tutoring, financial and academic workshops, to meet the educational goals of students who meet the eligibility requirements of the program. Conduct these responsibilities in line with policies and procedures of the college and the requirements specified in the respective grant application and amendments. This is an exempt, administrative position that reports to the TRIO Project Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Plan and provide services to students with disabilities, low-income, and first-generation students so they can fully benefit from college instructional programs, student activities, and administrative support

• Educate the college community regarding the goals and objectives of the grant, including program participant eligibility

• Recruit enrolled students and successfully serve participants per grant guidelines

• Administer, interpret, and evaluate technical, academic and career assessments; provide advising, educational , and career planning for prospective and enrolled students

• Advise students regarding technical and academic courses, program admission procedures and prerequisites, degree requirements , transfer information, and related college information

• Provide intake to support advising and educational planning, to include a personal plan of support services to meet the needs of each program participant

• Provide students information regarding colleges policies and procedures

• Provide assistance in the completion of financial aid applications and referrals to alternative funding sources; collaborate with alternate funding sources and college staff on student needs

• Demonstrate strong active listening skills to understand and address student needs and concerns. Engage with students on a variety of emotional and stress-related topics, offering empathy and providing immediate support and appropriate on campus or community referrals

• Collaborate and cross train with TRIO staff members to support shared goals

• Manage TRIO LinkedIn page per college guidelines

• Provide individualized study skills appointments to aid students in building self-regulated learning techniques

• Develop, implement, and coordinate group activities and workshops to assist students in clarifying academic, financial, and career goals

• Present individual and group orientation sessions; facilitate early intervention strategies ; be a role model and a mentor for participants

• Advise and inform college staff and faculty regarding program services

• Respond to inquiries from prospective students, outside agencies, general public and other technical and community college personnel regarding the TRIO grants

• Ensure areas of responsibility operate within the policies and procedures of the college, the program, federal and state agencies

• Maintain comprehensive participant records and related program files; maintain database of student records for reporting services

• Assume and effectively discharge other duties as assigned

• Provide transfer advising to students applying to LWTech Bachelors programs or transfer institutions

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree is required; preferably in education, social work, psychology , or related field.

• Sufficient combination of education, work, and lived experience to demonstrate ability to meet the following expectations:

• Provide effective advising and mentoring to a diverse population of students especially first-generation to college, low-income students, and students with disabilities

• Facilitate one on one and group sessions related to career discernment, financial literacy, and study skills

• Supervise hourly and student employees

• Mission-driven and passionate about programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from traditionally underrepresented backgrounds

• Experience with and ability to use multi-format technology for the successful completion of assignments, like: Microsoft office suite (including outlook), student management systems, social media, etc.

• Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills

• Ability to explain college process to students clearly

• Demonstrate patience and calm when working with students experiencing stressful solutions

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION

Initial salary placement is $4,971 per month. This is a 40-hours per week, exempt position.
