Position Overview

The Science and Advocacy Manager will play a critical role within the Oceanic Global team as a cross-functional lead bridging the gap between scientific and stakeholder communications. The ideal candidate is a strong communicator conveying complex scientific concepts to a broad audience, making science accessible, engaging, and relevant. In particular, this candidate should have an immense depth of knowledge across ocean/marine science, climate science, plastic pollution and material science. This position will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure that the latest scientific findings, discoveries, and insights are communicated effectively and creatively. 

This role will be responsible for sourcing the latest oceanic research, including solution innovations across plastics, carbon sequestration, waste management, etc. into digestible content, and driving advocacy efforts that inform policy, corporate action, and public behavior through the development of educational resources, public speaking engagements, consulting services and more. The candidate will be working across our strategic programs, which include, but are not limited to: the Blue Standard, Grants, Origin Program, Hubs Program, grassroots activations, corporate partnerships, and institutional event partnerships including UN World Oceans Day and the UN climate conference (COP).

Key Responsibilities

Research & Analysis:

• • Stay updated on the latest scientific and sustainability advancements, trends, and developments relevant to Oceanic Global’s mission and programming 
  • Analyze industry practices, identifying science-based sustainability initiatives and evaluating best practices, recommendations, and risks 

• Translate complex scientific findings into compelling narratives for a diverse, multi-stakeholder audience

• Lead on data review, analysis, and reporting with the Blue Standard team
• Support the team in the development and maintenance of a reference library/glossary that is updated with research, news, sources, and dates
• movements.
• Conduct research and attend industry and networking events to keep track of the latest advancements in relevant fields including relevant technologies, policies, organizations and communities to be aware of.

Content and Program Development:

• Work across cross-functional teams to develop educational materials including (but not limited to) messaging, industry guides, fact sheets, newsletters, campaign and social media content, thought leadership white papers, etc.
• Incorporate the latest innovations and business practices into the Blue Standard and Blue Actions
• Collaborate with industry partners to implement sustainable practices, providing technical guidance, resources, and support.
• Program roundtable discussions, educational content for OG community and beyond
• Support the development of Oceanic Global’s positioning on scientific topics to define a clear perspective that can be extrapolated for marketing materials, organizational collateral, panel discussions, interview, press moments, etc. 
• Assist the Blue team in developing a comprehensive science-based impact measurement and reporting framework for blue businesses 

Stakeholder Engagement & Advocacy:

• Build and nurture relationships with key stakeholders, including governmental bodies, NGOs, businesses, communities, and coalitions

• Manage the engagement and further development of OG scientific advisors 
• Support the programming, outreach, sourcing, and coordination of speakers and partners for Oceanic Global events
• Represent OG in relevant coalitions, community groups and at onsite gatherings/ conferences to build relationships with cross-sector allies in the ocean conservation, environmental action, and plastics advocacy movements.
• Spearhead community outreach to develop and strengthen partnerships with groups tackling similar issues.
• Act as a technical expert, support business engagement calls led by the Blue team. 
• Strategize how OG is best placed to support collective action and to cross-pollinate the efforts of synergistic groups.
• Execute on select coalition projects including creating communication materials, coordinating sub-committee meetings, producing events for collective action, and integrating OG partners and community members into movement-wide efforts.

Grants:

• Lead on the due diligence and vetting process for the Oceanic Global Grants program, which distributes grants globally to organizations working to protect our Blue Planet
• Project manage Oceanic Global Grants program including applications and reporting 

Team Support & Development:

• Mentor and guide the OG team, partners, hub members, and Blue Consultants on scientific matters, ensuring that all organizational outputs maintain scientific integrity
• Provide the team with teachable scientific moments on a cadence or as breaking news or relevant topics arise 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in Environmental Science, Marine Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field
• 2+ years experience in mission-related science across ocean science, climate science, material science, and sustainability innovations 
• Strong analytical and strategic skills 
• Diligent attention to detail
• Proven record and experience translate scientific information into compelling narratives and summaries for a non-scientific audience 
• Exceptional writing and verbal communication 
• Self-starter with the ability to start, lead, and manage multiple projects across collaborative, cross-functional teams
• Familiarity with the broader ecosystem of stakeholders working to protect our Blue Planet 
• Passion for Oceanic Global’s mission

Preferred:

• Master’s degree in a related field.

• Sustainability consulting experience.
• LEED AP, WELL AP, and/or other professional sustainability accreditation.

Oceanic Global Offers

• 100% Remote Position
• Full-time Salary – 40 hours per week 
• The PTO package includes 21 days paid time off and 11 public holidays
• Healthcare stipend
• Location: Remote working. Option to work EST or GMT
• Salary within $55,000-$70,000 range commensurate with experience and location
