Full-Time Financial Analyst

bschreckengost – Posted by bschreckengost Durham, North Carolina, United States

Job Description

Want to join a dynamic, rapidly growing SaaS company that’s disrupting a multi-billion-dollar industry? That’s what we’re doing here at Avalara. We’re looking for a skilled Financial Analyst to join our world-class Financial Planning and Analysis team. This role is fully remote.

The Finance team has been asked to significantly expand its influence by generating greater insights into the business, and this role will be a key part of that initiative. The Financial Analyst will build relationships across the organization and improve revenue forecasts based on what they learn. Success in this role will require a candidate to be curious about Avalara’s operations, the data they generate, and the journey the data takes through our various systems. A candidate demonstrating curiosity and a robust work-ethic will find this role to have meaningful autonomy and room for creativity.

This role has no responsibilities related to month-end close, but we respect our friends in accounting and admire their stewardship, ownership, accountability, and attention to detail. In addition to the attributes above, the ideal candidate will possess a strong financial modeling skillset, a sense of humility and urgency, the ability to communicate effectively, and a desire to improve everything they touch. This is a new role created to augment the existing revenue forecasting team.

C2C is not available for this role.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the FP&A G2M team to create, maintain, and expand complex revenue models used for near-term (1-12 months) and long-term (12+ months) planning
  • Modeling responsibilities may also cover aspects of bookings, expenses, and headcount
  • Build trust with existing stakeholders to obtain and validate forecast inputs
  • Improve granularity and accuracy of the revenue forecast
  • Participate in the analysis of monthly and quarterly revenue performance by providing insights on variances to plan and prior forecast
  • Develop and share knowledge of our products and revenue recognition rules
  • Support and improve the existing annual budgeting and monthly forecasting processes
  • Partner with senior finance leaders to perform ad-hoc modeling projects
  • Provide ad-hoc support to the FP&A team as necessary
  • Streamline processes by leveraging Adaptive Planning
  • Be a steward of your forecast data in excel and Adaptive
  • Maintain high attention to detail – we are a team of teachers, but your work should be ready for executives without manager review

Qualifications

  • 12 years of financial analysis experience
  • We encourage candidates with no prior FP&A experience to apply if they have 1-3 years of experience demonstrating the responsibilities or skills outlined above (operational forecasting, consulting, revenue recognition, revenue operations, financial operations)
  • Advanced Excel skills, including experience building detailed financial models
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize assignments and meet deadlines
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated experience partnering within and across functions to improve processes and drive results
  • Basic understanding of GAAP accounting principles, including ASC 606
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business

Preferred Qualifications

  • Understanding of the bookings-to-revenue process
  • Experience working with Workday Adaptive Planning, Salesforce.com, Tableau and/or PowerBI, SQL
  • Public company finance experience
  • Big 4 public accounting experience
  • Advanced degree and/or professional certification (MBA/CPA/CFA)
