Vocational Principal/Low Vision
Position Overview
The Division of Rehabilitation Services is seeking to hire an energetic educator at the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired in Jacksonville to coordinate the total low vision services program for the school with staff having direct contact with the students, including health services, educators, childcare, social services, psychologist, and administrators. This position conducts various assessments with students who are visually impaired, including learning media assessments, functional vision assessments, environmental assessments, and educational achievement tests. The educator position also develops a plan for utilization of low vision devices for students in keeping with the goals detailed in the Individualized Educational Program for each student commensurate with ability level. The Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) is the state’s lead agency serving people with disabilities committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and racial justice. The mission of the Division is to assist individuals with disabilities in achieving their goals of employment, education, and independent living.
Job Responsibilities
  1. Coordinates the total low vision services program for the school with staff having direct contact with the students, including health services, educators, childcare, social services, psychologist, and administrators.
  2. Conducts various assessments with students who are visually impaired, including learning media assessments, functional vision assessments, environmental assessments, and educational achievement tests.
  3. Develops a plan for utilization of low vision devices for students in keeping with the goals detailed in the Individualized Educational Program for each student commensurate with ability level.
  4. Plans and conducts Low Vision Clinic by the Lions of Illinois Foundation on campus.
  5. Participates in planning, organizing, and implementing disability specific outreach services, professional and parent conferences, workshops, and program.
  6. Maintains full continuum of developmental materials, low vision aids and equipment such as electronic magnifiers.
  7. Prepares and submits written reports of student progress.
  8. Plans and assists other school staff and parents in providing semi-curricular, extra-curricular and other activities which will supplement low vision utilization for individual students.
  9. Recommends and/or requisitions supplies and equipment for the low vision programs throughout campus.
  10. Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
  1. Requires possession of a current and valid ISBE-issued Professional Educator License with endorsement in Special Education endorsement in teaching students who are Blind or Visually Impaired (PreK – Age 2).
  2. Requires proficiency in Braille when instructing students who are blind or visually impaired.
Preferred Qualifications
  1. One (1) year of professional experience working with media used with students who are blind/visually impaired such as Braille and or other technologies.
  2. One (1) year of professional experience utilizing current educational trends, techniques, and best practices.
  3. One (1) year of professional experience preparing written documentation related to student performance and education.
  4. One (1) year of professional experience using the tools, materials and equipment associated with required coursework.
  5. One (1) year of professional experience maintaining patience and tolerance while working with students with a wide range of behaviors.
  6. One (1) year of professional experience maintaining effective working relationships with staff, assigned students and parents.
Conditions of Employment
  1. Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
  2. Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
