About the Opportunity

826 Boston seeks a creative team member with strong organizational skills to serve as the Writers’ Room Manager at the Boston Teachers Union K8 Pilot School (BTU). We are seeking a candidate with a strong command of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) principles and approaches, who can build on the current strengths of the BTU Writers’ Room program, including elementary-level teacher partnerships, social-emotional supports for middle-grade students, and student-centered publications.

The manager will also support the program’s future growth, including building connections with school leaders, teachers, and students and ensure high-quality, responsive programming.

826 Boston is a nonprofit writing, tutoring, and publishing organization where students in grades K-12 and beyond can share their stories, amplify their voices, and develop as leaders in school and in life.

Responsibilities

Program Management

  • Oversee all aspects programming at Boston Teachers Union K8 Pilot School 826 Boston Writers’ Room, in-class writing support, creative writing workshops, after-school programs, and publication projects
  • Identify and collaborate with partner teachers across subject areas to effectively leverage 826 Boston’s writing support to meet student needs and school priorities
  • Serve as key liaison between 826 Boston, BTU students, teachers, and leadership, local artists and authors, and community partners
  • Represent 826 Boston at school conferences and meetings; co-lead bi-annual meetings with school leaders alongside the Writers’ Room Director
  • Collaborate with the 826 Boston Publishing Team in executing program publishing projects, including classroom publications and program-wide collections
  • Identify and collaborate with authors, teaching artists, and local organizations to incorporate author talks and writing workshops into the Writers’ Room programming
  • Maintain program data, including tracking volunteer and student attendance, ensuring the completion of student and teacher surveys, and collecting student release forms
  • Conduct and coordinate program evaluation in partnership with Director of Impact to measure and monitor student progress, improve program design, and report out on program impact to school partners
  • Collaborate with Writers’ Room Director to set annual, measurable program goals; report out on progress at Mid-Year and End-of-Year Reporting; maintain regular communication with Writers’ Room Director regarding program successes and challenges

People Management

  • Supervise two full-time AmeriCorps service members and one-to-two part-time program interns
  • Guide all team members in establishing individual work and service plans in support of team goals; identify areas for professional development
  • Collaborate with the HR Department to recruit, onboard, and train AmeriCorps service members and program interns for the Writers’ Room Program
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Management Team to recruit, onboard, and train volunteers from partner universities and companies for the Writers’ Room Program
  • Coordinate high quality volunteer support by facilitating pre- and debrief conversations, communicating teacher and classroom expectations, and providing coaching and support

Additional responsibilities

  • Support organization-wide summer programming
  • Provide support at select outreach and fundraising events, including nights and weekends on rare occasions

 

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is a team player with a steadfast commitment to improving the quality of K-12 education, including adopting antiracist/anti-oppressive approaches, with a desire to work in a collaborative and inclusive culture and a passion for youth empowerment through writing and publishing.

826 Boston recognizes that impostor syndrome and the confidence gap might prevent some applicants from applying. Skills and experiences:

  • 3+ years of professional experience working in a K-12 school, education, or youth development nonprofit
  • Exceptional relational skills and experience in relationship-building and community-building within educational, nonprofit, or community-based settings
  • Exceptional time management, project management, people management, and resource management skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering community, building a strong sense of team, and embracing values of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to give and receive feedback with humility, regulation, and tact
  • Knowledge of and fluency with social and racial justice, intersectionality, BIPoC and LGBTQIA+ history, and historic/current systems of oppression
  • Ability to incorporate anti-racist and anti-oppressive practices into analysis, planning, and programming
  • Ability to take initiative, demonstrate flexibility, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Familiarity with the BPS system, particularly the schools in Roxbury, Dorchester, and Jamaica Plain
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Cape Verdean Creole preferred but not required
  • Experience with Google Apps, Salesforce and InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, or similar design tools preferred

Salary and Benefits:

826 Boston offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience in a similar position with the potential for an annual performance-based bonus. The salary scale for this full-time position (40 hours/week) is $56,650 – $60,775.

Basing compensation on someone’s ability to negotiate or their prior salary can lead to inequities and bias in how people are paid, particularly for groups experiencing historical oppression. Therefore, we do not ask for prior pay history from our candidates and our offer-making process is negotiation-free for salaries and benefits. We determine the best possible salary offer based on relevant experience and extent to which candidates demonstrate the competencies for the role during the entire hiring process. New hires are typically brought into the organization at a salary between the range minimum and the salary range midpoint depending on qualifications, internal equity, and the budgeted amount for the role.

This is an exempt, full-time position that reports to the Writers’ Room Director.
