Job Description

Ocean Associates Inc. (OAI) seeks a full-time General Engineer II to support National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS) in Silver Spring, MD. CO-OPS is the authoritative source for accurate, reliable, and timely tides, water levels, currents, and other coastal oceanographic and meteorological information. Key Responsibilities:

Plan and execute projects to address infrastructure design, construction, and maintenance at remote unmanned real time coastal tide and current measurement systems throughout the United States. Conduct facility assessments for buildings, structures, and environmental measurement systems. Provide on-site technical details and analysis to field teams as needed. Have a working knowledge of engineering design software such as AutoDESK, AutoCAD, and Fusion360. Coordinate with other teams within CO-OPS and NOAA to ensure that infrastructure projects are completed in a timely manner. Communicate plans, status, and results to Engineering Division leadership. Develop, improve, and update SOPs, engineering specifications, and other technical documentation to support CO-OPS coastal infrastructure.

Specific task requirements may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop total-cost-of-ownership models for CO-OPS coastal infrastructure.
  • Plan and execute service life extension work in coordination with appropriate field units.
  • Interpret and create engineering drawings in accordance with CO-OPS accepted standards and national, regional, and local building codes.
  • Participate in CO-OPS Sustainability working group to develop CO-OPS infrastructure investment priorities on a multi-decadal timescale.
  • Review engineering requirements and equipment requests for suitability at CO-OPS coastal infrastructure.

Start Date: August 15, 2023

Salary: This is a full-time position. Wage range is $19.38 to $24.37 per hour. Overtime is not anticipated. Comprehensive benefits package.

Required Skills /Education/ Certifications & Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, or ocean engineering and two years of related experience, or a Bachelor’s degree in structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, or ocean engineering and four years of related experience. No additional years’ experience required if doctorate in aforementioned fields.
  • Must be proficient in using a desktop computer, MS Office Suite, AutoCAD for designing infrastructure components for water level and meteorological stations. Strong analytical and technical writing skills are required.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Vault, AutoCAD, and any structural software such as STAAD-PRO, NASTRAN, etc. is highly desirable.
  • General database and query experience and familiarity with GIS are preferred.

Preferred:

  • Ability to work on-site in Silver Spring, MD one to two days per week.
