Salary – £45,065 – £47,823 Depending on experience
Hybrid working (50/50)
Can be based at any of our sites (Wallingford, Lancaster, Edinburgh, Bangor)

UKCEH is looking for an experienced People (HR) Business Partner to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

You’ll be joining our People department, which is a relatively new but close-knit and diverse team of almost 20 HR professionals and recruiters. The team are incredibly conscientious and passionate about delivering a high quality of service to their stakeholders and promote an open, transparent, and collaborative approach throughout the organisation.

As one of our two Business Partners, you will have shared responsibility for a wide range of activities, from supporting managers with employee relation cases, to providing support to our Science Area Heads, and delivering strategic direction and insight on key issues and initiatives for our Executive Board.  In addition, you will help develop and implement policies and strategies, provide employees and managers with advice on HR policies and procedures, implement change management initiatives, and partner with managers across the organisation.

As a senior member of the People team, you will play a valuable leadership role, providing mentorship to the wider   team and ensuring key projects are delivered alongside providing HR knowledge and ensuring compliance. You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Partnering with senior managers to provide support and guidance on people management topics
  • Working collaboratively across the organisation to develop, implement and embed people change initiatives
  • Acting as an escalation point for People queries that require additional support
  • Responsible for timely and compliant resolution of ER cases, as and when required
  • Working closely with our ERP system (Workday) specialists to provide people metrics to senior managers
  • Working alongside our existing Business Partner to ensure all policies are in line with current legislation
  • Partnering with the talent acquisition team to ensure recruitment activity is effectively actioned. Providing support where needed to scope out new roles and liaise with hiring managers
  • Partnering with the People development team to ensure that you have an overview of learning and development activities at UKCEH and supporting the ongoing development of the UKCEH toolkit for managers
  • Travelling occasionally to other sites (Wallingford, Lancaster, Edinburgh) to increase visibility and partner with colleagues across the organisation in person

This role will offer you a significant volume of variety, with the opportunity to introduce and implement new ideas and initiatives and work within a busy and dynamic team.

Owing to the nature of this role, it would suit someone who is people-oriented and enjoys developing relationships and increasing visibility across the organisation, at all levels. Due to the breath in this role, we are looking for someone who demonstrates significant HR experience including previous business partnering experience.

For the role of People (HR) Business Partner, we’re looking for somebody who:

  • Demonstrable track record of delivering at BP level
  • Confident, clear and approachable management style – set clear expectations and ways of working
  • Excellent communication skills – confident working with stakeholders across all areas of an organisation and able to inspire confidence through actions
  • Confident user of HR systems (Workday)
  • Up-to-date and in-practice knowledge of employment law
  • Track record of creating and implementing employee engagement best practice
  • Track record of highlighting EDI best practice
  • Can clearly articulate how you have used MI to improve and enhance HR advice and delivery to an organisation
