SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Located just outside of Seattle, WA, Lake Washington Institute of Technology (LWTech) was founded in 1949, and is the only public institute of technology in Washington State, that provides students with the latest cutting edge skills relevant to today’s workplace. Title: Instructional Support Technician I – Diesel TechnologyThis is a union covered position. As defined by the current classified bargained agreement, newly hired employees shall be placed between Step C $3,597 and Step F $4,043 of the salary schedule in Appendix A of the Classified Union Bargaining Agreement. Employees hired with an associate degree will be placed at minimum of step D. Employees hired with a bachelor’s or master’s degree will be placed at minimum of step E. Ongoing (Step G- Step M) step advancement is defined by the classified bargained agreement. (Per current bargained agreement, Instructional Support Technicians are scheduled to work when classes are in session. As a result, actual salary may fluctuate depending on number of days worked). Salary placement for current classified employees is per the classified bargained agreement.
This position works 40 hours per week. Working hours may vary but are typically between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday; schedule to be determined by the supervisor. This is a union-covered position, which requires the payment of membership dues/representation fees.

Responsible for working with students and faculty across all programs in the Diesel programs division in a team approach on student activities such as review, drill, practice, and research after instruction has been given by each technical instructor. The Instructional Support Technician guides hands-on experience with specific technical manuals, resources and equipment (including computer and web resources) keeps equipment in working order, and maintains tracking of same. Assists with donations and project intake and exit. Monitors lab activity for safety and industrial practice both as part of the instructional team and in the absence of the primary instructor. Assists with recruitment and student orientations and intake. Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of the occupational area through industry visits, reading, trade shows, and other appropriate activities.

This position typically starts at 7:00 a.m. and works only on the days class is in session, and reports directly to the course instructor

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Interpret, clarify and/or re-emphasize technical information and skill practice related to a specific occupation; follow and interpret policies, procedures, standard practices as they pertain to instruction and the college as a whole
• Add to the knowledge and skills taught in specific curriculum units with the instructor for use in the classroom or lab
• Coordinate instructional remediation with each instructor and other technical support staff; administer hands-on skill tests; monitor student projects and/or job workmanship; track and communicate with instructors about student progress and other issues; monitor different labs in instructor’s absence
• Monitor, demonstrate by example and direction, enforce and correct safety, sanitation and/or hazardous waste practices as appropriate
• Monitor students and demonstrate by example correct safety, sanitation and/or hazardous waste practices as appropriate to the particular shop environment, including hazardous labs, lock-out/tag-out processes, stacked loads, tagging of broken or unsafe machinery, dual shop areas, use of appropriate PPE at all times
• Assist in procuring donated training aids and material; learn and operate within college practices for procurement, use, and disposal of college property, donated property, and abatement processes; assist with monitoring students to assure appropriate educational use of materials, machines and time
• Repair, maintain, organize and clean occupational training equipment; monitor equipment, material storage, and handling; maintain inventories of technical supplies, tools, and systems; purchase, inventory, surplus, dispose of equipment and supplies in accordance with college policies
• Assist with planning and supervision of labs, maintain and communicate a schedule that fairly responds to contractual and program needs of the instructors served
• Maintain currency with industry practices; attend advisory committee meetings as needed; provide support for program related activities
• Maintain professional relationships with students enrolled in the program, acknowledging boundaries and responsibilities of the job; willingly uphold college policies and report unacceptable activities
• Create and contribute to positive relationships among the staff, students and campus community
• Uphold and model college expectations for civility and inclusion; be part of a team effort to assure a safe and inclusive learning space for all
• Operate college vehicles in accordance with laws and personal licensure to do so; Maintain licensure as appropriate to the particular job
• May supervise instructional assistants, work studies, and volunteers
• Regular and satisfactory attendance and punctuality; other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• High school diploma or equivalent with two years minimum experience in the occupation, or a graduate of the occupational program
• Proficient in understanding, interpreting, and explaining the vocabulary/nomenclature specific to the occupational area and in performing the specific occupational skills taught in the curriculum
• Ability to work independently and communicate well with employees, students and vendors
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to communicate effectively with students from diverse cultural backgrounds, ages, and ability levels
• Possess a current First Aid/CPR card or be willing to obtain same within 30 days of employment
• Washington State Driver’s license or ability to obtain same upon employment
• Ability to drive with a trailer, forklift license a plus
• Willingness to learn new skills in technical areas, pedagogy, and in IT tools and applications are required by program evolution
• Mechanical aptitude and ability to lift weight 50 pounds
• Demonstrated ability to work successfully with students, staff, and community from diverse backgrounds, including non-native English speakers, and a commitment to a culturally diverse work environment

This position works 40 hours per week based on lab and class schedule. This is a Full-time position that works primarily day time hours while classes are in session. Some work over breaks and in the evenings will be required on an intermittent basis.
