In our policy work, we work with organizers, movement organizations, advocacy organizations, policymakers, and young people to shift how this country keeps families and communities safe, as well as to create a society that promotes equality and human freedom.

 

Job Description

 

Civil Rights Corps seeks an experienced and passionate Policy Associate to support the Policy Department. The Policy Associate will report to the Policy Director.

 

The Policy Associate will:

  • Play a key role in coordinating cross-sectoral economic justice, racial justice, and community safety campaigns, including campaigns at the local, state, and federal levels;
  • Build resources that support new proposals, bills, coalition undertakings, and advocacy materials;
  • Build and participate in advocacy coalitions seeking local, state, or federal policy change;
  • Coordinate the work of a federal coalition that is advancing non-carceral safety at the federal level, including via both appropriations and legislation;
  • Conduct policy research to support new proposals, bills, coalition undertakings, and advocacy materials;
  • Draft policy and advocacy materials, including briefs, reports, memos, policy guides, and toolkits;
  • Provide technical assistance to grassroots organizations and movement advocates, including youth advocates, as well as liaise with and build deep relationships with these groups;
  • Work with other CRC departments in creating advocacy campaigns that integrate policy with litigation, organizing, public education, and strategic communications; and
  • Generally support the execution, integration, and streamlining of CRC policy projects writ large.

 

Qualifications

 

The ideal applicant is passionate about justice, a team leader, proactive, thoughtful, able to juggle multiple tasks, and able to work well in a collaborative environment. Experience in racial justice, economic justice, public health, and/or youth issues is a bonus, but not required. In addition, the ideal candidate will have some familiarity with state and federal politics, including experience with legislative and/or budget advocacy.

 

Specific qualifications we are looking for include:

  • A collaborative, team-oriented, and positive approach;
  • Experience doing federal advocacy at federal level, including some exposure to both legislative and appropriations work;
  • Significant experience in policy research and analysis;
  • Significant experience drafting and editing polished writing in multiple styles, including in an organizational voice;
  • Strong ability to build and maintain relationships, as well as communicate effectively with outside partners;
  • Race and identity competency, ability to understand and navigate issues of identity, power and privilege with partners, and colleagues;
  • Exceptionally strong research and writing skills; and
  • Proven ability to learn quickly, stay flexible, take initiative, establish priorities, work independently, and self-motivate.

Salary, Benefits, and Logistics

 

Salary range is commensurate with prior experience, from $58,000 – $67,000 per CRC’s current salary scale. Civil Rights Corps offers an outstanding and generous benefits package, including employer-paid health, vision, and dental benefits; transit benefits; an annual wellness benefit; retirement matching; and paid sick, family, and vacation leave. This position is based in Washington, DC; remote working arrangements are available while CRC’s physical office is closed or partially closed because of COVID-19.
