Reporting to the Director of Sykes Union and Student Activities, the Assistant Director serves as an integral part of the daily operation of Sykes Union, The Science and Engineering Center & The Commons (SECC) and the ballrooms, Club 1871, and Information Desk. This position manages both facilities and operations including working closely with Sykes Union student staff; acting as an advisor, planner, developer, and programmer for special events and programs; and serving as part of the Sykes Union and Student Activities Management Team to provide insight and recommendations in strategic planning, financial issues, student development, and departmental oversight.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience in a student union or university center environment; an understanding of student affairs in a higher education setting; excellent customer service skills; and a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Serve as primary point of contact for reservations, event planning, and coordination within Sykes Union and other campus spaces for faculty, staff, departmental, and outside conference groups
  • Administer day-to-day operations of Sykes Student Union and SECC ballrooms, Club 1871 and information desks including the support of building events and logistics
  • Supervise student staff in both Sykes Student Union and SECC spaces
  • Advise and train faculty, staff, and students
  • Collaborate with Public Safety, Physical Plant, Moving Services, Custodial Services, Campus Dining Service, and other members of the campus community
  • Maintain equipment replacement cycle for all Sykes related event equipment, technologies, and public space furniture
  • Utilize scheduling software system (25Live) to efficiently manage space
  • Serve as an active member of the Sykes Union, the Student Activities Team and DOSA
  • Assess project needs for the department
  • Serve on divisional and university wide committees
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of trends and best practices in student unions and higher education
  • Develop of reservation and event policies
  • Other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  • Master’s degree in Student Personnel, Student Affairs, Higher Education Administration, or related field
  • Background in space management, hospitality, student center/union operations, conference and event services, or related field

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience in a student center, student union or university center environment and/or related student affairs/higher education setting
  • Experience providing work direction and supervision
  • Experience advising and training both staff and students
  • Experience with scheduling software including 25Live and/or EMS
