Coalition Director Job Description
Job Summary: The Coalition Director supports the efforts of community members and organizations working together to reduce substance use. The Director will provide leadership, continuity, and coordination for the continued capacity building and oversight of the West River Valley Thrives Coalition and its activities, resources, and staff. This will include coalition and board development, management of grants, as well as planning for the sustainability of the coalition and its work. Coalition operation will be guided by the Strategic Prevention Framework (SFP) process, which includes assessment, capacity building, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The position will also include some direct programming responsibilities.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Identify, recruit and involve community stakeholders/sectors in the development of Thrives.
- Overall management of the coalition and supervision of staff.
- Collaborate with community agencies, parents, youth, schools and others to develop and implement comprehensive, coordinated community prevention efforts.
- Conduct regular coalition meetings to carry on the work of Thrives.
- Organize community education, training, and dialogue activities.
- Assures that Thrives’ mission, programs, and services are regularly presented to the West River Valley community.
- Represent Thrives at community meetings, events and other public forums.
- Implement with fidelity, all work plans as developed by the coalition.
- Attend all relevant grant meetings and required trainings, particularly those related to the Drug Free Community grant or other funding sources.
- Manage the Coalition’s fiscal resources and accounts payable within guidelines set forth by the fiscal agent. Manage all aspects of grant compliance and reporting requirements.
- Seek out and secure other funding sources to sustain the coalition.
- Collaborate with key partners and grant managers to develop data collection methods and supervise the collection of relevant data.
- Write and submit timely reports to all funders as required.
- Work with current members to recruit and develop Thrives’ Advisory Board.
- Participate in program implementation with Project Coordinator and other staff.
- Serve as the primary point of contact with our fiscal agent, Youth Services of Windham County.
Key Qualifications and Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (3-5 years) in fields related to substance misuse prevention, public health, social work, education, youth development, nonprofit management, and/or community organizing is strongly preferred.
- Commitment to health equity, trauma-informed, and strengths-based approaches.
- Capacity with nonprofit or organizational budgeting and financial management.
- Strong communication skills including written, interpersonal and public speaking.
- Ability to engage with and relate to diverse populations within a small, rural community.
- Previous grant writing experience is strongly preferred.
- Experience researching, writing and managing grants (experience with federal grants preferred).
- Substance use prevention and organizing experience is beneficial.
- Ability to learn on the job.
- Able to work flexible hours. Some weekend, night and occasional overnight travel required.
Preferred knowledge and experience (willing to train):
- Previous experience as a supervisor.
- Team-oriented project management and meeting facilitation.
- Experience planning and implementing programs using the Strategic Prevention Framework or similar model.
- Understanding of and experience working with or serving on a governing body such as an Advisory Board or Board of Directors.
- Knowledge of public health policy, healthy community design principles, or policy advocacy.
- Experience with fundraising and building a donor base.

Hours and Compensation: This is a 40-hour per week position eligible for generous benefits including paid time-off, health and dental insurance, and 403(b) retirement benefits. Starting rate, $25 per hour.
