Position Purpose

To perform the activities associated with customer metering and gas service work.  To also provide service as a gas emergency first responder with the objective of ensuring public safety and protecting company assets.  To perform these functions and achieve these objectives without direct supervision and to ensure that these activities are completed in a timely fashion and in accordance with State and Federal Codes as well as Unitil Company standards. To ensure the timely and accurate completion of all necessary records, timesheets, paperwork and documentation needed for accounting, regulatory, asset management, and related purposes. Ensures that all work activities and interactions with customers reflect the highest standards for conduct and professionalism. This position falls under the Department of Transportation drug testing requirements.

Principal Accountabilities

Operational Performance:

Meter and Service:  To plan and perform the activities associated with all aspects of customer metering and gas service work.

•    To diagnose and perform maintenance on a variety of customer’s gas appliances, which include: gas heating systems, gas water heaters, gas air conditioners, gas ranges as well as commercial and industrial equipment.

•    To perform gas and electric meter work, systematic meter changes and credit work. This includes data entry of test results into HTE, the filing of gas and electric meter tags, and the filing of all paperwork for meters, repairs, complaints and investigations.

•    To properly document all work orders electronically through the Mobile Dispatch System

•    To perform the installation and programming of automatic meter reader devices (AMR), as well as gas ERT’s.

•    To perform the installation of gas meter high pressure corrector devices, including programming, downloading, set-up, maintenance and alarm investigation.

•    To respond as an emergency first responder to any gas emergency situation to include gas leak situations. To immediately assess these situations and to make recommendations and/or decisions that will ensure public safety.

•    To identify, make safe and repair gas leaks at customer premises.

•    To perform all functions of the gas pipe fitter, which includes: construction and installation of meter fits, gas meters, in to out meter piping, as well as the installation, repair and diagnostics of gas regulators.

•    To properly care for and maintain company equipment such as; assigned vehicle, tools, material, etc., including timely completion of records associated with such equipment.

•    Must be able to perform stand-by on-call duties on a rotational basis for one week at a time.

•    Operator Qualification on covered tasks

•    Participate in all safety training programs and exercises.

Qualifications/Requirements

•    High School diploma or equivalent;

•    Possess a general aptitude and skill for mechanical work

•    Massachusetts Plumbers License – Journeyman or Master Plumber (Does not apply to internal candidate)

•    Must be able to obtain a Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License Medical Examiners Card within 120 days.

•    Pass all required Operator Qualification Tests

•    Must reside within a specified geographic area in accordance with UWUA / B.U.W. Local Union 340 contractual agreement.

•    Be available to respond to overtime work and emergency calls.
