Full-Time Land Stewardship Manager

The Eno River Association seeks a land management professional to help lead their growing land stewardship programs. ERA seeks candidates who support the mission of ERA and who respect and promote our goals of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. In the past several years, the Association has grown in staffing, contributed revenue, programs presented, and property protected. It’s a great time to join the Eno in this full-time role.

The Land Stewardship Manager works collaboratively with the Director of Conservation and Stewardship to manage the ERA Land Stewardship Program. Primary responsibilities include updating ERA and partner land management plans, improving and enhancing volunteer and community engagement for land management activities – particularly with communities that have traditionally been poorly served, managing a part-time Stewardship Associate, and overseeing of the annual land monitoring and land management activities.

Summary of key responsibilities:

Managing ERA’s Land Stewardship Program (40%) – Create, update, and work towards the implementation of preserve management plans, with a particular focus on climate resilience and community needs; work closely with other local and regional land trusts, especially on supporting climate resilient preserve management plans; assign and oversee stewardship work to be performed by stewardship staff; assess new acquisitions and develop baseline documentation reports for newly acquired ERA fee lands and conservation easements; identify and implement strategic land management programs and identify and pursue appropriate funding sources, providing grant administration for stewardship grants received; manage program and project-specific budgets

 Community Engagement and Volunteer Recruitment and Management (40%) – Work with appropriate staff to build authentic relationships and trust with the communities and partners in the watershed to support community environmental needs – ensuring key audiences and/or partners are being reached, with a focus on BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and Immigrant communities; recruit, train, and manage land stewardship volunteers, and work hard to involve volunteer stewards in a way that reflects the diversity of the community; assist in organizing and leading 30-40 volunteer workdays annually on ERA or partner-owned lands

 Preserve and Conservation Easement Monitoring / Management / Maintenance (15%) – Oversee annual property monitoring, reporting, and filing; assist with remediating documented issues, encroachments, and/or easement violations; use ArcGIS software to create maps; oversee the management of Eno-owned lands according to approved Management Plans

Other Tasks (5%) – Represent ERA at ERA and community events, as needed; attend professional development workshops, DEIJ trainings, and land stewardship partner meetings, as needed; work as part of a team to set, prioritize, and achieve strategic goals; working with other staff, participate in appropriate media relations opportunities, press releases, production of newsletter, social media, and other communications

 The ideal candidate will have:

  • a commitment to viewing all work through an anti-racist and equity lens
  • the ability to authentically listen and speak to community members and partners
  • experience in natural resources, ecology, botany, environmental sciences, land stewardship, land management, forestry, agriculture, and/or a conservation related field
  • the ability to be a team player with a sense of humor, a strong commitment to community-driven environmental protection, and the ability to work well independently
  • a working knowledge of North Carolina native species and ecology, management of common invasive weeds, and common issues associated with land management
  • a working knowledge of ArcGIS, Microsoft Office Suite, and Google Drive

This position is subject to activities beyond the typical indoor professional office setting. The essential physical requirements of this position include lifting, reaching, grasping, kneeling, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, and shifting; lifting 50 lbs. and ability to frequently lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects; ability to safely and correctly use hand tools associated with restoration work and ability to instruct and supervise others in the use of same tools; ability to walk over a variety of terrain; and operating a vehicle.

The position is full-time, approximately 40 hours per week, exempt from overtime. Most work will take place during regular working hours, but some evening and weekend work will be necessary. Please note: all employees are required to support the programs that the Eno River Association hosts July 4th and New Year’s Day, so flexible holiday dates are offered instead. Salary: $50,000, with a benefits package including paid vacation, PTO, health insurance reimbursement, and 403(b).

Eno River Association is an accredited land trust and watershed nonprofit founded in 1966 with a mission to protect the natural, historical, and cultural resources of the Eno River basin in northern Durham and Orange counties. It has protected 7,500 acres of natural and working lands and has helped create seven local, state, and regional nature parks, including Eno River State Park, Occoneechee Mountain State Natural Area, West Point on the Eno City Park, Penny’s Bend Nature Preserve, Little River Regional Park, Panther Branch Natural Area, and Confluence Natural Area.
