THE POSITION
To plan, organize, perform tasks and supervise in a leadership capacity the daily operations of the Traffic Signal/Street Lighting Technician, Electrician’s Assistants and Underground Utility Service Locator. Install, inspect, test, maintain, calibrate, troubleshoot, upgrade and repairs City-owned and shared traffic signal devices, illuminated crossing, streetlights and various facility electrical systems. The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current vacancy, as well as establish an eligibility list for future vacancies.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Ideal Candidate will be a hardworking and highly motivated individual possessing good leadership qualities, have the ability to communicate effectively and work well with others. This candidate will have previous experience installing, repairing and maintaining traffic signal equipment. The candidate will be a resourceful problem solver who will be organized and have excellent time management skills.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Assist the Electrical / Sign and Markings Supervisor with development of maintenance procedures and reports. Performs Employee Performance Appraisal and assists in training personnel as assigned. Promotes, maintains and corrects unsafe/working conditions. Provide lead supervision and technical support to staff. Install, inspect, test, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, upgrade and calibrate, a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment and software related to traffic control devices, streetlights, recreational lighting and facilities. Research, design, procure and install equipment and/or upgrade existing electrical/electronic systems. Verify equipment compatibility with existing devices. Conduct routine maintenance on electrical/electronic equipment, traffic control devices and street light systems. Keep accurate and up-to-date records and notes on all related assignments. Review contract construction projects and submittals. Inspect and test equipment. Proficiently read and interpret circuit diagrams, traffic signal timing and construction drawings, and service and repair manuals. Prepare plans and specifications for the procurement of parts and supplies on assigned projects. Ensure that proper safety precautions and safe work methods are followed. Assist with the preparation of standard operating procedures. Develop “punch lists” for work to be completed or corrected during construction, and perform other duties as assigned. Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position, in that Employee must be present to work on facilities and equipment impacting the public.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS Prepares and maintains accurate maintenance and repair records. Presents oral and written reports. Creates work orders and enters invoices. Performs electrical inspections. Uses and maintains a variety of tools and test equipment as required. Answers emergency calls and performs emergency repairs. Meets all standby program requirements; takes standby duty, works any shifts including weekends and holidays. Assists in the annual budget preparation for the Electrical Group, as directed. Perform related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Associate degree in electrical/ electronic technology or closely related field in highly desirable.
Experience: Three (3) years of recent experience as a Traffic Signal/Street Lighting Technician is required. Two (2) years of supervisory experience is highly desirable.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid California Driver’s License required upon hire. International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Traffic Signal Technician Level III Certification by completion of the probationary period prior to appointment. Possession of a valid IMSA Roadway Lighting Level I certificate and completion of a State of California approved electrical apprenticeship program is highly desirable.
