Starting Salary: $70,786.80

Reporting Structure: This position reports to a Principal. Junior Associates report to this position.

Primary Areas of Responsibility: Communications Strategy Implementation (30%), People Management (20%) and Client Project Management (50%).

Job Classification: Full Time, Exempt

This is not an entry-level position.

Position Summary:

The CommsPR Senior Associate is responsible for managing client projects and the day-to-day implementation of client work, as well as ensuring that content is created and sent to clients on time. They edit and approve drafts of pitches, press releases, statements, CRM tests, and other materials. They draw on their experience to contribute to overall client strategy. They manage 4-6 clients, owning relationships with clients as well as key members of the press. They directly manage Junior Associates and support their professional growth.

Primary Areas of Responsibility:

Communications Strategy Implementation (30%)

  • Draft communications plans for clients
  • Edit and approve drafts of pitches, press releases, statements, ICYMIs, talking points, op-eds, social media posts, etc.
  • Approve CRM tests before they go out to press lists
  • Own and grow relationships with key members of the press for each client
  • Work with principals to craft pitches for strategic long-term pieces, such as exclusives or profile pieces
  • Proactively look for creative applications of new political communications tools, techniques, and channels

People Management (20%)

  • Conduct weekly 1:1s with the Junior Associates you manage
  • Delegate work assignments, set clear expectations, and give feedback to your direct reports
  • Facilitate the professional growth and development of your direct reports
  • Support the onboarding and training of new Junior Associates on your team

Client Project Management (50%)

  • Build off of metrics of success set by Principals and determine the specifics of how to meet those metrics
  • Lead the day-to-day operations of client work
  • Work closely with Principals to effectively manage client expectations and deliverables
  • Serve as a front-facing contact directly with 4-6 clients, communicating with clients, leading client meetings, and attending other client meetings as needed
  • Ensure high-quality work is created, edited, and delivered to clients on-time and error-free
  • Serve as first-line of coverage for client requests outside of standard office hours

Required experience, skills, and competencies:

  • 2+ years of experience in a communications or public relations role
  • Strong persuasive messaging and narrative writing skills
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills, including content edits, copy edits, and the ability to give effective constructive feedback on writing
  • Knowledge of a wide range of news outlets across TV, podcast, radio, social media, newspapers, etc.
  • Familiarity with key reporters in the progressive space
  • Ability to move messages on Twitter and engage with reporters
  • Strong project and time management skills, including the ability to juggle multiple projects and deliver on tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to working within and managing a diverse team, including a basic analysis of diversity, equity, and inclusion as it applies in the workplace
  • Excellent communication and comfort working remotely with a distributed team across different time zones, using tools such as Google Docs, Zoom, and Slack
  • Comfort working in a highly collaborative environment, supporting your team, and celebrating success together
  • Commitment to integrity, ensuring that your actions match your words, and both addressing and learning from mistakes, especially as a manager

  • Experience managing people, such as supervising staff, interns, and/or volunteers
  • Experience working with either (or both) electoral campaigns and issue organizations
  • Experience in any of these additional tools and/or technical skills:
    • Cision/Meltwater (or other online media monitoring software)
    • Action Network (or other email campaign platforms)
    • Hootsuite/Tweetdeck (or other social listening sites)
  • Ability to speak, read, and/or write in multiple languages, particularly Spanish
