Full-Time Principal Communications Consultant

Starting Salary: $85,145.00

Reporting Structure: This position reports to the CommsPR Director of Staff. Senior associates and interns report to this position.

Primary Areas of Responsibility: Communications Strategy Development and Execution (60%), Team Management and Supervision (40%).

Position Summary:

The Communications Principal manages the departmental team of Senior and Junior associates, ensuring a mentorship and training approach focused on professional growth. They are responsible for centering equity and inclusion in the management of the team, leading the execution of client work, implementing team-wide strategy, and managing team capacity and workflows. They may specialize in a certain skill or area of the department’s work and manage select client accounts.

Primary Areas of Responsibility:

Communications Strategy Development and Execution (60%)

  • Provide expertise and support in booking and placements on TV, print, radio, and podcasts
  • Advise on & approve communications plans drafted by Senior Associates
  • Serve as a first chair on client strategy, leading internal team coordination meetings
  • Collaborate with other team members to develop strategies pertaining to materials that serve our clients
  • Manage the execution of client projects, ensuring that high quality work is delivered on-time and on-budget
  • Collaborate with other team members to develop integrated online advertising and acquisition campaigns
  • Proactively look for creative applications of new communications tools, techniques, and channels, keeping abreast of recent developments

Team Management and Supervision (40%)

  • Lead internal senior PR management meetings and morning check ins for the entire team, including creating agendas and moderating calls
  • Co-manage the team’s day-to-day work to edit, create, and write Comms/PR content by leading regular check in meetings, providing feedback, and approving final work product
  • Ensure a mentorship & training approach to management of a team of junior and senior associates and interns, with an emphasis on facilitating the team’s professional development
  • Coordinate the delegation of tasks and assignments, utilizing team members’ strengths and providing opportunities for team members’ ongoing development
  • Support managers in cultivating professional growth of their direct reports
  • Work to center equity and inclusion in the management of the communications team
  • Own administrative tasks, including staffing, programming, hiring, onboarding, and some business development

Required experience, skills, and competencies:

  • 5+ years of political communications experience, including senior leadership experience, within fast-paced contexts such as campaigns, Capitol Hill, independent expenditures, non-profits, labor, advocacy groups, and/or consulting firms
  • Commitment to electing Democrats, advancing progressive values within U.S. politics, and working on multiple campaigns and/or issues, including a strong interest in working with Fireside’s existing roster of clients
  • Demonstrated knowledge of political communications and best practices for maneuvering the related media markets including prior experience pitching reporters/setting up interviews, building press relationships, booking for TV/radio, etc.
  • Ability to draft and edit high quality writing for all forms of communication materials including press releases, talking points, op-eds, social media, etc
  • Strong proofreading and copyediting skills, with the ability to produce error-free, grammatically accurate materials that meet AP standards
  • Demonstrated ability to influence the news cycle, place stories at critical moments, and influence others to share and discuss your intended story, talking points, and/or narrative
  • Experience pitching and placing stories with reporters as well as established reporter relationships at either the regional or national level
  • Excellent time and project management skills, including the ability to delegate work effectively, juggle multiple projects at once, and deliver on tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated experience working with and managing diverse teams, with a well developed analysis of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
  • Excellent communication and comfort working remotely with a distributed team across different time zones, using tools such as Google Docs, Zoom, and Slack
