Role Background

Our reorganisation over the last few years has increased our ability to support members and represent their views. Recently we created the role of Executive Director to take an active leadership role and relieve pressure on the voluntary directors.

Following the retirement of our current Executive Director, Lynn Wilson, we are now seeking an inspirational and influential leader who is passionate about equality, diversity and inclusion to lead our association into its new phase of growth.

Main responsibilities

We are seeking to appoint an Executive Director who will be responsible for achieving our aims whilst working within the framework of values and strategies set by the Board of Directors.

The Executive Director is ultimately responsible for the delivery of the strategic goals as agreed by the Executive and Directors of the association.

The Executive Director works closely with the Executive [the chair and two vice chairs], Directors and members of staff to present the public face of the association, build our sector influence and increase our member benefits.

We would expect our new Executive Director to bring enthusiasm and a positive attitude to the role.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of influence in the disability sector with a track record of innovation and success.

You will have proven leadership abilities with strong people management and communication skills to enable planning within the constraints of a small team. You will also have financial and business development skills together with a proven ability to network successfully

Skills, Attributes and Experience

The ideal candidate will be able to bring the essential following characteristics to the role:

  • Creativity: an understanding of how the association can provide new ways of creating value for membership and how NADP can present the benefits for our community of disability practitioners and the wider community of disabled students.
  • A demonstrable commitment to positive models of disability including the social model, affirmative model and human rights model.
  • Leadership: inspirational and decisive – being prepared to take forward ideas you believe in and work with others to develop them further.
  • Strategic thinking: seeing connections and thinking through a cohesive strategy for NADP which you can recommend to the Board of Directors
  • Commercial awareness: advocating the aims of NADP whilst understanding and explaining the business case for embracing disability as a priority for Government, business and society.
  • Networked: a significantly connected individual.
  • Credibility: confident at board level and in front of the target audience specifically the disabled community and government.
  • Communication: able to develop, create and implement a media strategy to promote the organisation and its aims.
