Acumen is looking for a Senior Associate to join our Finance Team with ~4 – 6 years of experience with monitoring grant budgets and expenditures and preparing grant reporting. Acumen has a hybrid work environment, working in the office Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Candidates must be located in New York City or Tri-State area.

About Acumen Finance
Acumen, an international non-profit with seven boutique, entrepreneurial offices across six continents and seven jurisdictions working with philanthropic donations, grants, and investments, requires centralized financial oversight and support. The NY Finance team provides that oversight and support.

About the role
You will support the New York Finance team and work closely with our FP&A Manager, reporting into the Head of Program Finance. You will be primarily responsible for many of the daily analytics and reporting tasks related to our grants activities.

The primary responsibilities for the role are:

Grants Management :

  • Participate in the budgeting, planning, development and implementation of new programs and projects
  • Perform grant- and contract-related accounting, including monthly close reconciliations and schedules required to support the internal/external reporting process and external audits
  • Review and analyze expenditures against monthly forecasts to identify gaps in forecasting process
  • Effectively communicate and provide guidance on eligible, allowable, reasonable, and billable costs and expenses based on grant contracts and internal policies

Reporting and Systems :

  • Prepare and/or present financial reporting, dashboard and forecasts, which provide leading indicators of operational and financial performance by programs/grants
  • Summarize results/raise key issues to the Head of Program Finance on routine basis/as need arises
  • Participate in evaluating and implementing Finance reporting systems upgrades/rollouts. Prepare timely and accurate customized and standard grant reports ensuring restricted funds are used per donor intentions and/or relevant grant milestones
  • Participate in the expansion of grant reporting templates in Prophix to systematize grant reporting analysis

Compliance :

  • Coordinate with members of the NY Finance team to ensure grants management-related data is accurately captured in internal systems
  • Review monthly expenditures to ensure they are in compliance with the regulations governing individual grant agreements
  • Develop and lead trainings on allocability and allowability of expenditures to program teams
  • Assist with activities related to fiscal year end and grant close out processes
  • Assist with annual audit, project audits and tax compliance by creating supporting schedules
  • Other duties as may be needed or assigned by the Head of Program Finance

Skills and Qualifications

  • 4-6 years of experience with monitoring grant budgets and expenditures and preparing grant reporting
  • Experience in working with foundation grants in a not-for-profit environment preferred
  • Someone with grant management background, familiar with reading grant contracts or terms, have foundational understanding of budgets
  • Familiarity with US GAAP and fund accounting principles
  • Familiarity with Uniform Guidance CFR 200 preferred, specifically Subparts D and E
  • Able to provide exceptional communication and customer service skills, plus demonstrate ability to perform in a team environment with excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • Required: Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Excellent organization skills and proactive communicator
  • Excellent excel analytics and modelling skills
  • Commitment to accuracy, attention to detail, and follow–through
  • Ability to work in a fast-moving environment with high degree of patience and flexibility
  • Preferred: Proficiency with Netsuite and Prophix reporting software

  • Authorized to work in the United States
