Job Description

Gryphon Scientific is seeking applicants with a bachelors degree or equivalent in the life sciences for Research Assistant (RA) positions. As an RA, you will collaborate on projects focused on public health and safety, biosecurity, biosafety, emerging infectious diseases, and homeland security, with support from senior scientists. RAs will abstract and analyze scientific literature to translate research into policy and practice. In addition, RAs may learn and apply coding skills to analyze large, heterogenous datasets and/or engage scientists to advance detection of emerging infectious diseases. Projects incorporate a variety of approaches such as: data analytics, computational modeling, policy evaluation, stakeholder engagement, and more. Final products will guide decision-makers in emergency preparedness, emergency response, healthcare, biomedical science, biosecurity, biosafety, and defense. Gryphon Scientific welcomes RAs the opportunity to use critical thinking, creative problem solving, and analysis to tackle stimulating projects in a wide range of exciting fields. Each project will require RAs to think, research and write in new ways. This RA position will primary support projects in Gryphon’s All-Hazards Preparedness and Response & CBRN Defense practice area and Biosafety, Biosecurity, and Emerging Technologies practice area, but RAs may have the opportunity to work on projects in other practice areas as well.(RAs will not, however, be involved in laboratory work; there is no lab on the premises.)

Duties

Gain familiarity and understanding of topics including but not limited to infectious diseases, global health security, biosecurity, emergency preparedness and response, biotechnology, and/or public health.
Perform internet-based research and other searches to identify, collect, organize, and analyze relevant data from peer-reviewed literature, news articles, public reports, and interviews with subject matter experts.
Collaborate with team members to interpret research results and formulate next steps.
Provide status updates and interim results to project managers and team members.
Perform project-related logistics and support functions including note-taking during meetings.
Prepare written reports and presentations describing data collection and analysis methods and results.

Minimum Qualifications

Undergraduate degree in a life science discipline (Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Biomedical Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field).
GPA 3.0 or higher (out of 4.0) during final two years of college.
U.S. citizenship is required due to government client requirements.

Ability to apply knowledge of scientific concepts to a variety of topic areas, particularly when available data are incomplete or scarce
Proficiency in methods of scientific research and presentation, including designing and executing a literature search to address a research question, collecting and organizing data from published sources, interpreting data, and presenting findings in reports and meetings
Ability to work independently and with teams
Interpersonal skills
Attention to detail; organization skills and excellent follow-through

Additional Skills and Experience

Experience doing modeling or data analytics using Python, R, or SQL
Proficiency in Excel or Tableau
Knowledge of statistics and statistical methods of analysis
Chinese reading proficiency
