ORGANIZATIONAL OVERVIEW

Strathmore is a nonprofit multi-disciplinary arts center outside Washington, DC with multiple venues, strong community partnerships and robust educational programming. Spotlighting world-class talent and serving as a launch pad for local artists, Strathmore presents nearly 400 accessible and affordable events and exhibitions each year in the Music Center,  Mansion, on our 16-acre campus, at AMP, and throughout the community.

Position Summary:

The Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras (MCYO) of Strathmore creates a seamless connection between the artistic and the educational experience for students ages 7 – 18. MCYO is highly regarded regionally and nationally as one of the country’s most outstanding youth orchestra programs. Founded in 1946 as the Montgomery County Youth Orchestra, MCYO is the oldest and most established youth orchestra program in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

Under the direction of MCYO Music Director Kristofer Sanz and MCYO Artistic Advisor Jonathan Carney, MCYO offers three full orchestras, a chamber ensemble, three string orchestras, small ensembles and chamber groups to over 500 talented musicians in grades 2-12. Auditions for MCYO are held annually in late August.

 

The MCYO Programs Manager rounds out a three-person leadership team charged with the day-to-day management of the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras.  The MCYO Programs Manager knits together the operational and programmatic aspects of the MCYO team, providing expert coordination among all constituencies – students, parents, staff, coaches, and production team.

 

Reporting: The position reports to the MCYO Acting Managing Director

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

May include, but are not limited to the following:

 

Programmatic Responsibilities – 50%

Artistic Direction and Planning

Off-campus/Outreach programs:

  • Coordinates & manages 5 off-campus programs: Small Ensemble, Summer Strings Camp, Chamber Music Program, East County Strings, and Latin Strings and Percussions.
  • Helps develop and monitor these program budgets.
  • Helps develop, implement & oversee curriculum, calendar, rehearsal & performance schedules, auditions, special events, registration, etc.
  • Arranges staffing: coaches & teachers for off-campus/outreach programs.
  • Arranges space for rehearsals/recitals.
  • Supervises coaches, students, and volunteers involved for off-campus programs.
  • Liaison/point of contact for all off-campus programs.

 

On-campus programs:

  • Assists all staff during the audition processes.
  • In coordination with Managing Director and Music Director, plans and oversees season Parent Orientation Meetings in Fall, including logistics and hand-outs, meeting agenda, etc.
  • Attends all concerts/rehearsals – on and off-campus. Assists with logistical needs, prior to and during.
  • Assists the Managing Director and Music Director for weekly rehearsals, – interfacing with managers, volunteers, getting subs when needed, developing a shared sub list
  • Helps recognize/appreciate volunteers
  • Assists Managing Director and Music Director in determining concert day needs, schedules.
  • Together with Managing Director and Music Director, coordinates orchestra/ensemble tours (domestic and abroad); do the research, get bids, etc.
  • Together with Managing Director and Music Director, coordinates MCYO member receptions/social events

 

Administrative Responsibilities – 30%

General Management

  • Maintains regular communication with coaches, parents/guardians, and students in the special programs.
  • Assists Managing Director with office administrative duties, including response to calls, mails, email, record-keeping, and filing.
  • In coordination with the Managing Director, enters program information for rehearsals and performances on Booking Sheets and Event Booking calendar.
  • Responsible for the review & revision of MCYO documents, procedures, guidelines, and scholarships.
  • In consultation with the Music Director, recruits, and selects staff, (coaches, managers, volunteers) as needed.
  • In conjunction with the Managing Director, identifies, contracts, and coordinates payment for all external space rentals (for rehearsals, performances, and events).

 

Liaises with Strathmore Departments and Partners – 15%

  • Coordinates with Education department and MCPS for LSP/ECS logistics and program implementation
  • Coordinates with Marketing/Communication, Advancement, and Operations departments
  • Together with Music Director, ensures effective communication with MCYO constituent groups (ASTA, MCPS, private teacher network, UMD, alumni, other arts orgs)

 

Other duties as assigned – 5%

 

ACCOUNTABILITIES

Satisfactory completion of this job includes successfully:

  • Facilitating full integration of MCYO programming and operations with Strathmore departments.
  • Coordinating and supporting the growth and development of MCYO off-site programs.
  • Streamlining the audition process and rehearsal season launch of MCYO orchestras.
  • Contributing to a proactive flow of new ideas that support Strathmore’s artistic goals and that helps describe them in dynamic ways.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with fellow staff, patrons, partners, vendors, and volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in youth ensemble coordination or management
  • BA or equivalent certification
  • Knowledge of Washington Metro area arts landscape
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience driving timelines and coordinating multi-faceted project plans
  • Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Desire to grow, learn, and contribute to a team

 

STATUS AND SALARY

This is an exempt, salaried position. Salary is commensurate with experience, in the range of $48,000- $55,000 annually with a competitive benefits package. All contacts and correspondence will remain confidential.
