Full-Time Planned Parenthood Communications Manager (Remote – with some travel)

Job Description

The Position 

We are currently seeking a Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin Communications Manager to engage and expand awareness of reproductive rights access and threats specifically within the state legislatures through earned and social media. As a Communications Manager, you would regularly work with the communications and digital teams to amplify messaging and elevate it into the media narrative. You will also work with organizing, government relations and political strategy teams to ensure communication tools and programs connect to meet the needs of those departments.

We are looking for an experienced Communications Manager who will support communications strategy, write blog posts and press releases, and provide earned media support for community specific and statewide events and needs.

This position is responsible for developing and executing communications strategies for internal and external communications in alignment with agency mission and strategic goals. The Communications Manager ensures communications are inclusive and representative of the communities we serve. This individual directs communications programs for the organizing and advocacy team.

The position is remote, with a preference for Wisconsin familiarity and experience. We are looking to fill the position as soon as possible but the start date is flexible and continues through December 31, 2022.

What We Are Looking For 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop earned media and communications strategies in alignment with the overall mission and strategic plan. Provide programmatic oversight.
  • Work closely with communication staff to create alignment between national and affiliate message goals including those reaching out to Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, LGBTQ+, and economically divested from groups of people
  • Ensures internal and external communications reflect commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion
  • Support communications strategies for the digital advocacy team.
  • Develop and execute a full media relations strategy. Includes action items such as:
    • Cultivate and maintain relationships with targeted media with an equity and inclusion lens.
    • Assist in the development of media content for multiple media platforms.
    • Develop press releases, talking points, message documents and statements for PPWI and PPAWI.
  • Implement and manage media campaigns as strategically advised. Track related metrics and report out on results.
  • Assist in the training and preparation of staff spokespeople: Prepare message points and background information for spokespeople prior to each interview. Staff media interviews and provide feedback as warranted.
  • Serve as agency spokesperson as needed.
  • Prepare media materials for proactive media outreach or in response to inquiries.
  • Manage and maintain media database, including traditional and non-traditional media.
  • Support crisis communications as needed.
  • Stay up to date on media trends and best practices, making recommendations to the department on new strategies and tactics with an equity and inclusion lens.
  • Provide PPWI staff, coalition and board members with periodic updates of PPWI’s presence in the news.
  • Work with organizational partners and support the development of external media spokespeople to ensure messaging includes equity and inclusive components.
  • Develop relationships and strategies to effectively collaborate with legislative and coalition partners to effectively engage with the media.
  • Cultivate and/or maintain relationships with media professionals with a special emphasis on those who cover health care, business, education and public policy.
  • Work with outside consultants to support content development and leverage impact.
  • Suggest innovations in communications and media strategy.

Qualifications:

Must have

  • Track record of centering equity and justice in your work.
  • Passion for progressive policies with a specific passion for reproductive rights and access
  • Experience with developing and executing communication strategies in journalism, digital, earned, owned, and/or paid media communications, public affairs, and/or message development.
  • Task management: Able to adapt to the evolving needs of a project. Able to tackle big-picture projects and break them down into smaller pieces
  • Organized and efficient: Experience or demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects or goals at once in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.
  • Acute attention to detail: Track interactions and tasks with detailed notes. Plans ahead for roadblocks and bounces back quickly when problems arise.
  • Effective communication skills (written and verbal) that are clear, concise and honest.
  • Ability to work weekends and weekday evenings, occasional holidays.
  • Working knowledge of and experience working within the Wisconsin media landscape.

Nice-to-have

  • Existing relationship with members of Wisconsin media
  • Degree in journalism or communications
  • Bilingual written and verbal skills in Spanish/English a plus
  • Knowledge or previous experience working on this issue is a plus, but not required

Job Details 

Location: The position can be located anywhere in the U.S. with a preference for Wisconsin experience/connections.

Salary: The salary range for this position is $57,600 – $72,600  annually, depending on experience. We offer a generous benefits package, including paid vacation and sick leave, health insurance, a monthly phone stipend, and hands-on, paid training. At the end of the campaign, there may be opportunities for advancement.
