About finEQUITY.org:

finEQUITY is a community-sourced financial technology organization. We are a nonprofit with a mission to build a digital road from prison to financial prosperity. In doing that work, we advance the financial futures of families impacted by mass incarceration. Our first product, not our last: an innovative way for recently released community members to establish a healthy credit score so that they can access affordable housing, phones, utilities, cars, and more. Our loan program, which was piloted in New York in 2021, is set to expand in 2022-2023 to 14 states. See our pitch on our loan program here. We see ourselves as contributing online tools to fight against the collateral consequences of incarceration and combat both racial and economic inequality. In the future, we will focus on addressing barriers to employment and families managing criminal justice debt. For more information, please visit https://www.finequity.org/our-team

  • Type: 20-40 hours
  • Duration: 6 – 12 months with opportunity to renew

We are seeking a talented Product Design Researcher to join our organization at a critical juncture in our start-up journey. We value design and understand how important intuitive and delightful design is for the community members we serve. Your research will help our entire organization learn from our current and prospective members. Your findings will inform your product testing and your creation of customer-centered narratives will help our incoming marketing lead meet their storytelling objectives. Your first few months will include conducting qualitative and quantitative research, designing hypotheses, prototyping solutions, evaluating results, and helping our engineers and operations team bring your insights and product designs to life.

You will:

  • Finalize a phased user research agenda based on a list of research questions we have related to our primary demographic: heads of households directly impacted by the prison crisis. This includes: perceptions and costs of financial services; experiences of families with incarcerated loved ones (particularly around managing debt, costs, and savings during incarceration and upon release); and costs and experiences related to criminal justice debt (i.e. having bank accounts frozen due to debt owed) and housing or transportation barriers.
  • Utilize appropriate quantitative and qualitative methods to produce tactical, strategic, actionable, and durable insights that inform design and development (such as what solutions need to be prioritized, current and new product use cases, and user types/personas).
  • Co-coordinate user study logistics within a remote first environment (collaborate with participant recruiters/operations team, schedule interviews and sessions, and supervise distribution of incentives/gift cards). Help define and shape the collaborative design (co-design) research practice at finEQUITY.org.
  • Meticulously document and clearly communicate research findings with a strategic voice, outlining prioritized recommendations, frameworks, or potential design solutions for in-house or contract developers and project stakeholders through visually compelling presentations and documents. This will include presenting research insights to current finEQUITY.org members, our CEO, and even our board of directors.
  • Work with team members to create design concepts that support efforts from early-stage feature discovery through usability testing, final delivery, & launch, continuously learning to use a customer-focused, iterative design process. Produce storyboards, user flows, journey maps, and wireframes that effectively communicate detailed user actions and experiences.

About you (qualifications):

  • 2+ years of relevant work experience in UX, product design, user testing, and/or design research.
  • Experience with utilizing design tools for wireframing, prototyping, creating mockups, etc.; ex: Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma and Sketch.
  • Track record of deploying different research and product testing strategies based on objectives (examples: generative research, evaluative research, usability research, surveys, UX diaries, concept testing, and feedback sessions).
  • You are self-driven with experience in crafting research synthesis to be read by a broad non-technical audience and non-designers.
  • Proven knowledge around best practices regarding informed research consent and safeguarding confidential research information.
  • Proven ability to work confidently and creatively on ambiguous problems and ability to use analogous inspiration as a tactic.
  • Proven experience interviewing (remote interviews) and rapport building with community members who may live in more under-resourced or under-served communities.
  • Your special sauce: We recognize not everyone will have all of these requirements. If you meet most of the criteria above and have a history of expanding your skillset, please still apply.
  • Evidence of commitment to our mission and vision.

Note about applying:

A portfolio and presentation are critical to interview for this role. It should communicate your work experience and be an example of your design, research and communication skills.
