Summary Position Statement

The Museum has an active roster of exhibitions, installations, artist residencies, and events, which employ a dynamic range of media, disciplines, and approaches,  that are supported by a creative and skilled team of museum technicians. Under the general direction of the Exhibitions and A/V Manager, the Exhibitions Technician (AVI) will participate in audio/visual design, production, and maintenance, including video and sound design and production, and will work as part of the overall exhibitions team to design, construct, install/de-install, maintain, and repair a broad variety of Museum exhibits that feature interactive and/or audio/visual components, including those in the Museum’s Discovery Center.

 

Essential Functions

  • Assists with design and development, constructs, installs, maintains, and repairs audio/visual and interactive exhibits (AVI) focusing on a wide range of subject matter, their environs, and special projects utilizing a wide range of materials, equipment, and technologies
  • Organizes and maintains AVI components for all museum departments
  • Helps to maintain and upgrades AVI, troubleshoots, repairs, and/or coordinates repair of AVI, and makes recommendations for equipment purchase, system design, and facility utilization
  • Assists with planning and preparation of AV equipment and tech for events, programs, and performances, in support of relevant program and event staff
  • Creates and modifies audio/visual assets for delivery in the museum environment, through web platforms, and via mobile devices, as required.
  • Assists in installing and deinstalling both long-term and short-term exhibitions
  • Performs routine exhibition maintenance, facilitates daily operations, and maintains organization in all areas of the Discovery Center
  • Maintains workshops, shared areas, and storage areas in a clean, well-organized manner
  • Documents and manages AVI inventory of equipment, supplies, and materials on an ongoing basis
  • Operates light and heavy equipment, including manual and electronic hand tools, forklift, and/or scissor-lift
  • Follows safety rules, safe work practices, and uses safety equipment as required
  • Attends relevant meetings, workshops, and training sessions, as required

 

Non-Essential Functions

 Installs, places, mounts, and hangs art and artifacts

  • Works under the direction of the Animal Care Manager to assist with routine maintenance, cleaning, and care of the live animal collection and the marine mechanical systems
  • Participates in professional development opportunities to maintain knowledge and skill
  • Assists with specific fundraisers or other Museum programs and events
  • Assists individuals, groups, and Museum partners in the operation of audiovisual equipment
  • Provides training and instruction to museum partners, and others, working on audio/visual projects as part of Museum initiatives and partnerships
  • Answers inquiries concerning the use of A/V, including microphones, speakers, video screens, projectors, monitors, connecting wires and cables, and lighting
  • Works with AVI equipment companies as needed
  • Work collaboratively with all Museum staff and maintain effective communication regarding the needs, upkeep, and ongoing maintenance of the Discovery Center
  • Perform other duties as required

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

 Knowledge of

  • Sound technology, standard audio equipment
  • Visual technology, monitors, and projectors
  • Materials, techniques, and equipment used in basic carpentry construction, mechanics, and electronics
  • Human-computer interaction (HCI) methods, techniques, and best practices is preferred
  • Electrical principles and basic wiring; soldering
  • Safety protocols for small electrical systems

 

Ability to

  • Troubleshoot and resolve technical and mechanical issues
  • Train users that may have limited audio/visual experience
  • Work occasional weekends, evenings, and holidays as necessary
  • Travel off-site within Anchorage to manage Audio/Visual equipment and production in a variety of settings including wilderness venues
  • Work independently, under pressure, in a fast-paced environment, prioritize multiple competing tasks and demands, and seek supervisory assistance as appropriate
  • Organize work processes and select work methods and procedures; set goals, monitor progress, and multi-task
  • Communicate clearly in written and oral exchanges
  • Assist museum visitors in the event of a fire or other emergency

 

Qualifications:

  • High-school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field (e.g., science, design, computer technology, video production, film arts, and sciences) preferred
  • Two years’ experience using Microsoft Office Suite software, Adobe CC software, Internet navigation, and research, required
  • One year of experience working with computer-operated media systems, and experience working with planetarium equipment preferred
  • Previous experience working with live animals and/or science laboratory chemicals, procedures, and safety protocols preferred
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
