Full-Time Training and Intervention Coordinator

Job Description

Position Summary

Under the leadership of the Assistant Director of Training and Prevention, Sexual Violence Response (SVR), the Training and Intervention Coordinator (TIC) Will work to build the community’s capacity to effectively respond to sexual assault, stalking, and intimate partner violence (dating or domestic violence) through the coordination, development, implementation, and evaluation of trainings and educational programs. The position includes serving as a general resource, advocate, and referral agent for students seeking sexual assault, intimate partner violence, and stalking information and services. They will participate in SVR’s 24/7 year-round on-call shared rotation. The TIC will assist with survivor walk-ins, appointments, and virtual or telephonic support as needed.


Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary liaison between Columbia University (SVR) and affiliate institutions regarding preventative and skills based trainings for employees and students. This includes initial outreach campus climate interview, and all follow up communication and scheduling involved in organizing online or in-person training sessions
  • Participate in the development of strategic plans, goals, and measurable objectives for training programs and educational initiatives. Develop distinct learning objectives for specific community constituents based on their current campus climate and needs. Stay abreast of best practices for preventative trainings (creative design approaches, delivery methods, and practical exercises), develop and generate recurring reports on completed, outstanding, and in-progress trainings. Design and implement evaluation tools to assess the effectiveness of trainings, program curricula, and performance outcomes. Maintain a database outlining the above statistics and assist with continuous quality improvement and sustainability plans. Keep informed of necessary policy directives related to the college sexual assault field including, but not limited to, the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights/Title 1)(, VAWA/Clery Act, New York State Enough Is Enough, etc
  • Foster partnerships with other educational institutions, while continuing to maintain and develop an existing network of contacts. They will spearhead community outreach and stay abreast of current developments in the college sexual assault field by participating in professional list-serves, reviewing current literature and research pilots, and attending professional conferences
  • Develop and conduct student trainings around sexual violence, dating violence, domestic violence, stalking, and related matters across Columbia University schools and affiliate institutions. Work in collaboration with SVR’s Training & Prevention Team to assist in the implementation of programs on campus
  • Participate in the SVR 24/7 year round advocate rotation, providing crisis intervention, rights and options, advocacy, medical and legal information, accompaniment, and safety planning to students who identify as survivors of trauma, violence or abuse. As part of the 24/7 on-call rotation7 SVR Training and Intervention Coordinator is required to report to campus, hospital emergency departments, law enforcement agencies, court houses, etc. on short notice for extended periods of time in response to emergency and critical incidents related to students’ experiences of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking, and abuse
  • Provide comprehensive and culturally competent work that is inclusive and directly results in desired program outcomes
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Frequent evening and weekend hours required

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent required
  • Minimum three years’ experience preferably in sexual violence education, and risk strategies
  • Prior experience developing, implementing, and evaluating violence prevention and education programs
  • Must possess a demonstrated knowledge of sexual assault dynamics and effects. Experience using multi-media presentation tools
  • Experience working with survivors and the ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters with discretion while working effectively with students, faculty, and administrative constituencies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of support and reporting options for victims/survivors
  • Must have the ability to remain calm and respond to individuals in crisis and emergency situations and handle graphic and sensitive situations
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills and have a demonstrated ability to present on-on-one sessions, conduct small and large group presentations, workshops, and trainings
  • Able to manage time efficiently and prioritize tasks

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree from an accredited institution. Demonstrated experience in providing direct advocacy experience, community building and curriculum and lesson plan development.

Other Requirements

  • Working Hours: Required to participate in a 24-hour, 7 days per week, year-round on-call rotation. Normal Business Hours — In general, 9:00 a.m. — 6:00 p.m. Monday-Friday. After-Hours — Defined as 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 a.m. Monday-Friday, and 12:00 a.m. — 11: 59 p.m. holidays and weekends
  • On-Call — Being available during scheduled rotation 24/7 for crisis counseling calls and in-person response. In cases where on-site support is required, staff is expected to respond within a reasonable period of time
  • ADA Compliance
    1. Physical Ability: tasks involve extended periods at work station or keyboard. Tasks involve commuting primarily, but not exclusively in Manhattan at various hours of the night or day. Tasks involve working a flexible schedule that will include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
    2. Sensory Requirements: verbal and written communication is required. Tasks may involve exposure via Sight and smell of bodily fluids, evidence bearing clothing and visible injuries. Tasks involve listening and responding to intimate physical knowledge of violence, crime or abuse against a student.
    3. Environmental Factors: tasks may involve contact with angry or potentially violent individuals. Tasks may involve contact with individuals with known and unknown diseases. Tasks may include contact with individuals under the influence of either legal or illegal substances
