OVERVIEW

The Health & Life Sciences (HLS) team, through its programmatic engagement with key stakeholders and global community of scientific experts, operates four practice areas – a. advisory role, b. a scientific learning agenda, c. special projects, and d. Alzheimer’s disease focused investments.

Within the scope of Alzheimer’s disease focused investments, Gates Ventures aims to support development of novel therapeutics and therapeutic targets. To date, Gates Ventures has supported the Dementia Discovery Fund, co-funded a grant program with the Alzheimer’s Association – Part the Cloud – with a focus on Inflammation and Bioenergetics, is a co-funder of the fNIH Accelerating Medicines Partnership in Alzheimer’s Disease (AMP-AD) to identify novel drug targets, complementing investments in diagnostics/biobanking, data sharing and related areas.

THE POSITION

We are looking for an individual with a strong science/technical background to join the HLS team to serve as an Associate Director/Manager on our Alzheimer’s Disease initiatives. This individual will report to the Director, Health & Life Sciences. This position will support the management and potential growth of the Gates Ventures AD initiative by closely tracking the literature, conducting scientific due diligence on potential investments, and managing the current portfolio of projects. The position will require the ability to manage a variety of stakeholders, effectively manage multiple bodies of work and work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams. This individual will provide oversight, track grant progress, and work with program partners on portfolio progress and management.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The individual taking on this important role will be responsible for a wide range of activities and relationships, including but not limited to:

  • Partner with the Alzheimer’s Association to oversee project execution, facilitate collaboration, monitor and manage progress and help inform funding decisions for the Part the Cloud awardees.
  • Track and report on the progress of funded investigators, including overseeing submission of progress reports, conducting progress review meetings with funded investigators, and reporting to GV leadership.
  • Conduct literature research and proactive outreach to identify potential opportunities for further investment.
  • Support deep-dives and learning agenda on scientific hypotheses, novel mechanisms of action and develop targeted investment approaches to guide the strategy
  • Provide scientific due diligence on potential investments, both grants as well as venture investments.
  • Develop processes and tools to enable efficient program management across the initiative.
  • Manage regular check-ins with partners and funded projects, including agenda setting and tracking of follow up action items.
  • As needed, support other GV activities and partnerships related to our Alzheimer’s Disease initiatives.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) with 3-5 years of experience (neuroscience/AD or related dementias specialty degree preferred)
  • Prior experience in:
    • Life sciences research, familiar with neuroscience, therapeutic target identification, and/or drug development – preferred.
    • Management consulting / advisory services – nice to have.
    • Start-ups / scaling new ventures – nice to have.
  • Exceptional oral, facilitation, and written communication skills; and empathy.
  • Excellent software skills with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to effectively manage projects and track to timelines.
  • Ability to learn new content quickly and identify connections.
  • Comfortable with highly unstructured and ambiguous situations; ability to proactively identify solutions in such situations and execute those approaches.
  • Experience in developing and managing strong partnerships and relationships inside and outside the organization, managing conflicts, and building consensus. Effective as a collaborator in complex internal & external organizations.
  • Commitment to the organization’s core values, mission, and programs with an approach that is consistent with the organization’s guiding principles and holding self to the highest ethical standards.
  • Experience working in a matrixed environment.
  • This position is based in the Greater Seattle Area. In a pre-COVID world, this position would have required the ability to travel up to 30%, and given the nature of the initiative, it will require collaborations across time zones and continents.
