Leadership Greater Chicago (LGC) is the region’s premier civic leadership incubator, delivering the knowledge and network to lead bold, transformative change.

Since 1983, LGC has delivered a world-class, intensive 10-month leadership development experience to 1,200 proven leaders through its Signature Fellows Program, providing the foundation for a lifelong commitment to civic engagement.

LGC is the only organization in the region that dares to bring together high-performing individuals of many races and ethnicities from all sectors – private, nonprofit, and public – to tackle the area’s most pressing issues. This proven formula has generated decades of rich conversation, created lifelong relationships, and developed thought leaders, that combined have shaped the civic landscape of our city and our region.

LGC marked its 35th anniversary in 2018 with the creation of a new senior executive leadership experience titled The Daniel Burnham Fellowship. The Daniel Burnham Fellowship, the newest addition to the LGC portfolio, is an accelerated civic onboarding experience for C-suite and senior executives who are new to Chicago or new to their role. It is designed to inspire these leaders to mobilize and exert their combined influence and intellect to positively impact Chicago, its future, and the continued economic progress of this dynamic region. The Fellowship launched with great success in February 2019.

Job Purpose:
The Director of Leadership Programs is a member of the LGC executive team, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The Director of Leadership Programs is responsible for:

  • Ensuring LGC is executing on its mission of developing a pipeline of civic leaders and convening, connecting, and mobilizing these leaders to make positive change in the Chicago region through its fellowships and other leadership programs and activities;
  • Providing strategic oversight and leadership direction within the Programs function and sustaining and growing its annual revenue generation of $1.1 million
  • Driving ongoing improvement, innovation, and sustainability in program structure, design, planning, delivery, and execution;
  • Recruiting and selecting candidates for the Signature Fellows Program and The Daniel Burnham Fellowship
  • Leading program development and execution for The Daniel Burnham Fellowship
  • Managing program development and execution for the Signature Fellows Program, Leadership Breakfast Series, Leadership Exchanges, and Leadership Fellows Association (LFA) programs
  • Serving as primary liaison to both the Convene Committee of the LFA and the Recruitment and Selection Committee of the LGC Board of Directors, and working in tandem with the Chief Operating Office as co-liaison to the Mobilize Committee of the LFA
  • Collaborating with the Program Senior Advisor to lead the School of Deans for the Signature Fellows Program
    • The School of Deans is a body of experts (many are LGC Fellows) in various fields across all sectors that consults in a volunteer capacity on the content and resources needed to deliver world-class curriculum and an overall exceptional Fellow experience.

Direct reports are the Program Manager (fulltime position) and Program Coordinator (fulltime position). The Director also works closely with the Program Senior Advisor (contract position).

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:

Program Leadership

This role calls for someone who can collaborate with the CEO, members of the executive team, and board leadership to envision and actively provide input on the direction of leadership program offerings for incoming Fellows and the entire LGC Fellowship (1,200 strong). The Director will be a critical thinker and, as a member of the executive team, expected to contribute to the development and evolution of LGC and its long-term direction.

The Director is responsible for managing the entire Program function – Signature Fellows Program, The Daniel Burnham Fellowship, Leadership Breakfast Series, Leadership Exchanges, School of Deans, and LGC and LFA Board committee support in relevant areas (Recruitment and Selection Committees, Convene Committee, Mobilize Committee). This involves coaching the Program Manager and Program Coordinator to ensure the team plans and executes the Signature Fellows Program, Leadership Breakfast Series, Leadership Exchanges and Committee meetings and activities on time, within budget (involves tracking revenue targets and expenses for all activities under the Program portfolio), and at the highest quality standard that maintains LGC’s culture of excellence in execution, content, delivery, relevant curriculum, and customer service to all Fellows and guests. More specifically, the Director builds a team culture that is Fellow-focused (customer focused), stays current on socioeconomic issues and trends affecting the region, and consistently identifies, develops and cultivates relationships with the School of Deans and all speakers and partners.

Additionally, there will be regular collaboration with the Program Senior Advisor. Ownership of the School of Deans resides with the Senior Advisor.

The Daniel Burnham Fellowship

The Director will be responsible for leading the program development and execution of The Daniel Burnham Fellowship (TDBF)

Recruitment and Selection

  1. Recruitment and selection activities for TDBF include researching candidates, networking with and recruiting candidates through in-person meetings and calls, and regularly convening with the CEO to discuss recruitment activities, results, and demographics of Fellowship cohort. Additionally, developing a communications and engagement plan to build and sustain the Fellowship participant pipeline during the recruitment cycle to the Fellowship launch each year.

Planning Fellowship Curriculum

  1. This includes developing a schedule for TDBF sessions and events, conducting regular meetings with the CEO and Senior Advisor to determine the content, speakers, venues and activities during TDBF sessions and events, requesting and securing venues, and requesting and securing guest speakers (and when appropriate, supporting the CEO in securing speakers and venues).

Fellowship Execution

  1. This involves coordinating and managing logistics, vendors, guest speakers, Fellowship participants and LGC staff support during Fellowship sessions and events, and documenting these processes/procedures.

Evaluation

  1. This involves conducting surveys of Fellows upon completion of each session and a focus group upon completion of the Fellowship to receive feedback on successes and areas of development for TDBF; then performing qualitative (and/or quantitative) analysis to synthesize key takeaways from the feedback and how the feedback can be applied to enhance future iterations of TDBF.

Leadership Fellows Association (LFA) Committee Leadership and Support

As liaison to the Leadership Fellows Association’s Convene Committee, the Program function is responsible for ensuring regular meetings of this committee are taking place and supporting the promotion and execution of the activities of the committee – Leadership Exchanges (one trip per year), Dine & Dialogue Series (held in February and July), and any ad hoc LFA programs which are vetted and developed in conjunction with the Convene Committee.

The Program function shares these same responsibilities with the Marketing, Communications and Development function in management of the Mobilize Committee of the LFA.

Fellow Recruitment and Selection

The Director is responsible for leading the recruitment and selection process for the Signature Fellows Program in partnership with the Program Senior Advisor. The Program function owns the entire project management of the Recruitment and Selection process.

For the Signature Program, the function partners with the leadership and members of the Recruitment and Selection Committees of the LGC Board, as well as the Marketing and Communications function, to drive outreach and recruitment efforts for future LGC Signature Fellows Program participants. The Program function actively supports and participates in the Class selection process.

Key processes overseen by the Director (in partnership with the Senior Advisor) include:

  • Driving and supporting the annual Class selection process (Q3 and Q4):
    • application building, evaluation and tracking via SmarterSelect, recruitment of panel interview participants (Fellows to serve on the selection panels), candidate communications, analytics, meeting and interview scheduling and support, materials prep, and other duties as needed.
  • Creating, documenting, and maintaining processes, best practices and lessons learned for future reference

In conjunction with the CEO, the Director shares primary responsibility for the recruitment of executives for The Daniel Burnham Fellowship, all communication to prospective and selected candidates, and excellence in the execution of The Daniel Burnham Fellowship sessions and related activities.

EXPERIENCE

  • 7-10 years of work experience at a minimum
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Background/experience in education, program development, or a related field is a plus (e.g., degree in education/administration, Teach for America, AmeriCorps, classroom experience)
