West Chester University, a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, seeks to hire four vacant positions for the Area Coordinator (AC) for the Office of Residence Life and Housing Services. The Office of Residence Life and Housing Services provides an environment of learning which fosters ongoing holistic development for all community members by creating and sustaining inclusive communities rooted in ethical decision making and intentional and supportive connections. This is a full-time position within the Division of Student Affairs, awarded as one of the “Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs” by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education for the second year in a row.

WCU serves approximately 17,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, 23% identify as Hispanic/Latino, Black, Asian, and Native American Indian nations, and 24% are Pell grant eligible. Reporting to the Associate Director of Residential Programming & Academic Initiatives, the Area Coordinator (AC), is a 12-month live-off position responsible for all services and day-to-day operations of a residential area of 1,000-2,000 students. The AC creates and maintains strong relationships within the Division of Student Affairs (DOSA) and with other University partners including Academic Affairs, Public Safety, Dining Services, Facilities, USH Affiliated Housing, and the CARE Team to work collaboratively and support the missions of the University.

Each Area Coordinator will have a collateral leadership role in one of the following areas: Co-curricular initiatives and student leadership; staff recruitment, training and development; themed housing and living-learning community initiatives; and assessment and special projects.

Primary Responsibilities Include:

  • Supervision of Graduate Hall Director area staff and undergraduate staff including delegating tasks and responsibilities, conducting regular staff meetings, holding supervisory one-on-one meetings and conducting employee evaluations for an assigned area.
  • Community development and crisis management including serving as a university hearing officer, serving as a Policy & Process Advisor (PPA), participating in an on-call rotation and maintaining an understanding of current Title IX, Title II, Clery Act, Campus SaVE, and FERPA, and other legislation regarding students’ rights and services.
  • Facilities and administrative management including managing all openings and closings of assigned area, conducting regular walkthroughs of assigned area, working alongside USH Community staff, and maintaining updated records regarding assignments, billing, and room conditions.
  • Assisting with the implementation of a robust summer housing operation.
  • Residential learning development including providing oversight to all aspects of programming and community-building activities to support the residential and DOSA co-curricular programs, collaborating with campus partners, integrating faculty into community-based programming, providing guidance to direct reports on hall government/council advising, and serving as an advisor for a campus-level student leadership groups.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, or related area.
  • A minimum of two years of postgraduate experience in residence life/ residential education in a higher education setting
  • A minimum of two years of staff supervision at the postgraduate level.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A minimum of four years of postgraduate experience in residence life/ residential education in a higher education setting.
  • Experience working within a public-private partnership/ residential program.
  • Experience with assignment management software such as The Housing Director or StarRez.
  • Significant direct experience in at least two of the following areas: Experience with recruitment, supervision, training, and development of graduate and paraprofessional staff; Advising student organizations; Design and implementation of educational initiatives in alignment with a co-curricular plan/residential curriculum; Working with living-learning communities in a college/university context; Assessment methods and strategies in a residential/university setting; Enforcement of Student Code of Conduct, policies, rules, and regulations; Crisis management and/or conflict resolution.
  • Experience working within a residential curriculum model.
  • Demonstrated interest in and experience working with college students including diverse college student populations.
  • Experience in crisis assessment and intervention.
  • Evidence of collaboration with campus partners and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability in facilities management.
  • Demonstrated ability in advising student leadership groups.

Special Instructions

This position requires frequent evening and weekend work and participates in an on-call rotation.

This position is deemed “essential” and must remain or report to work during partial or full day closings of the University due to hazardous road conditions, emergency circumstances or for other reasons.
