An exciting career opportunity for an innovative academic leader committed to student success, who can participate in senior decision-making at Centennial College while providing strategic direction for the administrative and operations-related functions for a large department, multiple departments or programs (collectively known as a ‘division’) within the College through the leadership of AVPs and/or Directors.

About The Role and Leadership

As Associate Vice-President (AVP) of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, you will play a vital role in leading a central hub focused on enabling and facilitating cultural transformation and strategic decision-making, overseeing the strategy and mandate of the Global Citizenship, Education and Inclusion (GCEI) and Indigenous portfolios, and coordinating equity, diversity, anti-racism and inclusivity activity across the College.

As AVP, you will drive strategic initiatives and enabling practices (such as reflective and disruptive learning and development, dismantling of systemic inequities embedded in structures) related to equity, diversity and inclusion; Indigenization and decolonization, and anti-oppression, in order to sustain, deepen and transform the College as an agent of social change. Working in consultation with the established Global Citizenship Education and Inclusion, and Indigenous Education departments, you will oversee and address the needs of Centennial’s people, students and community, and ensure a seamless connection with inclusive, equity-driven discussions and decision-making.

Position Scope

You will be responsible for engaging the vision, mission and values of the College Responsible for engaging the vision, mission and values of the College within the department / function and aligning the direction and strategic outcomes to operational / portfolio strategies, through inspiration, motivation and role modeling. You will also be responsible for the strategic leadership and management of administrative and operational functions for a large organizational unit exercising delegated authority for policy and programmatic decisions. You are expected to achieve goals through director and managerial colleagues; typically, multiple levels of professional and supervisory personnel. You will oversee the management of areas of responsibility.  Direct teams and provide leadership to achieve goals and vision of the department, portfolio and organization.  Responsible for hiring and retaining personnel, career coaching, personal development for direct reports and is accountable for the performance of employees.

As AVP Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, you develop and deliver complex, comprehensive financial analysis, business proposals, high level strategic modeling, both short and long term, and provide advice to senior leadership in decision-making. You will develop the direction of the departmental policy development for programs and administrative operations. Negotiate and influence on issues of College-wide impact that are focused on the concepts, approaches, and practices of the portfolio.  May serve as senior advisor to the Vice-President on program and policy development. As AVP Equity, Diversity and Inclusion you will be accountable for strategic initiatives and enabling practices (including reflective and disruptive learning and development, dismantling of systemic inequities embedded in structures) related to equity, diversity, and inclusion; Indigenization and decolonization; and anti-oppression in order to sustain, deepen, and transform the College as an agent of social change and to engage with understanding truth though colonial deception and genocide for Reconciliation obligations as treaty citizens

You will also oversee the strategy, mandate and the GCEI and Indigenous portfolios, and coordinates equity, diversity, anti-racism and inclusivity activity across the College

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate for the position of AVP Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will possess:

  • A Post-Graduate degree in a relevant field
  • A minimum of 11 years’ experience in administrative and financial management, goal and strategic setting, a track record of innovation and impact on an institution-wide scale, senior management experience, or combination of education and relevant / lived experience.
  • Lived experience as a self-identified member of an equity-seeking group.
  • Demonstrated history of progress in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, belonging, anti-racism and de-colonization within an organization: from strategy development to implementation
  • Mastery level capabilities with respect to equity, diversity, and inclusion and its facets including, but not limited to, cultural, ethnic, racial, religious, gender, gender expression, age, sexual orientation and differing abilities that make us human; Indigenization and decolonization, and anti-oppressive practices
  • Thorough understanding of core equity, diversity and anti-racism concepts including employment equity, human rights, power and privilege, oppression, emotional intelligence, culture competence, implicit bias and trauma-informed approaches
  • Strong networks of educators, facilitators and consultants with experience in anti-racism, de-colonization, inclusion and equity work
  • A strong appreciation for, practical experience in, and knowledge of Truth and Reconciliation, of indigenous ways of knowing and doing, and the language around inclusive policy
  • Substantive and practical experience in identifying and effectively addressing long standing historical, systemic issues and points of advocacy
  • Expertise in working and guiding organizations in inclusive ways to identify and dismantle oppressive practices embedded within structures
  • Experience in providing oversight and direction in the design, development and sustainability of robust programs and education
  • Experience in innovative and inclusive research that drives cutting edge EDI, for example though not exclusive to Ashoka Changemaker Campus Designation
