Freelance Women Empowered AGYW Training Materials Adaptation Consultant

Global Communities – Posted by Global Communities San Diego, California, United States

Job Description

PCI, a Global Communities Partner is seeking the services of a consultant to adapt a training curriculum used for forming adult savings groups for use with Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) between the ages of 15-24. The consultant will also create one-page summaries of the meeting guides to use as teaching aids during savings group meetings.

PCI has a long history of working with adults to form savings groups and is now looking to form them with AGYW who are out of school in Botswana under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) program called DREAMS (Determined, Resilient, Empowered, AIDS-free, Mentored, and Safe). While most processes of the savings groups will remain the same, certain adaptations are needed to fit the needs of AGYW, as well as fitting the training within the broader program so the content doesn’t repeat material from meeting  trainings.

Background

PCI, a Global Communities Partner is an international development non-profit organization that is in the process of merging with another nonprofit to become one organization known as Global Communities (GC). This listing includes both organizations’ names because the length of the contract will span past the official merger date in September 2021, though the funding for the position is coming solely from PCI and will not be affected by the merger beyond an organizational name change. As a combined organization, our mission is to create long-lasting, positive and community-led change that improves the lives and livelihoods of vulnerable people across the globe.

In Botswana, Global Communities is implementing the PEPFAR-funded DREAMS program. One key component of the program is the formation and support of savings groups with out-of-school adolescent girls and young women (ages 15-24). Global Communities is currently working with local partners to form and support adult savings groups, targeting Pinagare and SASA participants as well as caregivers of vulnerable children and adolescents in the program, and aims to launch an AGYW-adapted version of the methodology by the end of August 2021.

Women Empowered (WE), is Global Communities’ proven and evidence-based savings group methodology that focuses on both the social and economic empowerment of women. Based upon standard savings group programming, WE groups bring together 10-15 members to develop financial literacy through saving money, and access loans from their pooled savings. In addition to increasing women’s access to financial resources, WE groups focus on building the social capital of group members. During weekly or bi-weekly savings meetings, groups dedicate time to discuss and make decisions on how to address issues that affect them, gaining experience which builds their skills, capacities, and self-esteem. Participation in WE groups increases members’ access to information and resources, and promotes collective action and community organizing. This combination of economic and social empowerment positions women as leaders and decision-makers in their households and communities.

Tasks and Responsibilities

The consultant will work with staff in Botswana to adapt/edit the current training materials used with adults to be used with AGYW. The consultant will review the other trainings offered to the same age groups in the Economic Strengthening portfolio to understand and remove any repetitive content from the WE training materials.

The guides are designed to be used with groups that meet virtually in-person, and the activities included in the guides must be engaging to AGYW.

The consultant will also develop one-page summary guides for each session that the trainers can use as teaching aids during the meetings.

Though not required, if the consultant has experience in graphic design, they are welcome to create an updated design for the meeting guides and summaries. Otherwise, the consultant should provide Global Communities with any advice or guidance on best design practices for curricula used with youth programs for delivery of this Economic Strengthening Program. .
