Full-Time Water Maintenance Worker

Job Description

Work involves varied types of construction and maintenance work in the water utility. This position is responsibility for repairing, replacing and maintenance of water services, mains, hydrants, valves and valve boxes. Work requires the non-continuous application of mechanical aptitude and physical strength and is performed in accord with instructions stating jobs to be performed. After a training period, employees in this class must have the ability to do the work without immediate supervision. Work is inspected by the Water Distribution Management Team while in progress or upon completion for quality and results.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
• Perform work relating to the installation and/or repair of water mains, laterals, fire hydrants, valves, make service taps, assist in making cut-ins, classify soil and serve as a competent person. Remove, test, repair, reset, install water meters, locate stop boxes, and check for leaks and stoppages. Answer to complaints of high water bills, leaks, frozen or malfunctioning meters and related matters. 35%
• Respond to after hour call-ins when called to assist in repairing water main breaks, service leaks or related work. 20%
• Perform water service turn on and turn offs. Make water service taps. Thaw water services and water meters. Flush hydrants and exercise water valves. 20%
• Operate equipment used in the construction and/or maintenance of water works facilities. 10%
• Complete all necessary paperwork pertaining to work assignments. 10%
• Perform other related duties as assigned. 5%
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Possess and maintain a valid WI CDL, Class B with air brake endorsement, and good driving record.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time.
• Good knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with coworkers, supervisors and the general public.
• Ability to work in confined spaces.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Examples of tools include: all types for hand tools, including manual and power tools; all types of digging tools, such as shovels, spades, picks, etc.; concrete and steel cutting saws; and a variety of specialized water industry tools such as cutting machines, tapping machines, and leak locating and detecting devices. This list of tools and equipment is ever changing and should not be considered all-inclusive.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and taste or smell.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be asked to work long hours in all weather conditions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
