Use your people, leadership, coordination, and communication skills to engage and grow the Food Bank’s volunteer and food drive program by developing relationships with individuals, area employers, organizations and other entities in the greater Charlottesville and Lynchburg areas.

The Volunteer & Food Drive Coordinator (VFDC) leads the coordination of a robust volunteer program, which includes the organization of screening, recruitment, orientation, retention, and recognition efforts for volunteers who assist in Food Bank operations. The Coordinator also manages logistics related to regional food drives.

This position reports to the Volunteer & Food Drive Manager and works in close collaboration with Operations staff, Partner Engagement & Programs staff, and is part of a highly collaborative and successful Development team.

The Blue Ridge Area Food Bank is a respected, regional nonprofit providing nourishing food and hopes to neighbors. Founded in 1981, the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank serves 25 counties and eight cities in central and western Virginia, from Loudoun and Winchester in the north to the Lexington and Lynchburg areas in the south. We provide food to nearly 119,000 visitors each month through a partner network of more than 200 food pantries, soup kitchens, and shelters, as well as through nutrition programs for children, seniors, and rural neighbors. Total revenues of approximately $50 million and an operating budget of $11 million support the work of more than 65 employees in four locations, including our headquarters and main distribution center in Verona.

The key responsibilities of the Volunteer & Food Drive Coordinator include:
  • Manages inquiries and questions from existing and potential volunteers and works to match volunteer skills and interests with existing needs
  • Coordinates the recruitment, orientation, and training of volunteers and works closely with Operations staff to ensure quality, consistent management of the BRAFB Volunteer Program
  • Ensures that volunteers receive and understand policies, procedures, and regulations that are necessary and relevant to their work and the mission of the Food Bank
  • Actively works with cross-department managers to recruit volunteers for ongoing needs, nutrition programs and specialized needs
  • Identifies and pursues opportunities to connect BRAFB with local businesses and organizations to engage volunteers and maximizes BRAFB volunteer visibility through local resources
  • Works with the Volunteer & Food Drive Manager to coordinate volunteer communication, support and develop volunteer recognition programs and initiatives, and evaluate program effectiveness, prepare necessary reporting, manage a budget, and establish annual goals
  • Communicates, coordinates, and assists with logistics of food drives in the greater Charlottesville and Lynchburg areas including record-keeping, delivery, and pickup of barrels by working with colleagues in Operations.
Required job qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent amount of training and work experience coordinating volunteer programs required;
  • Minimum two years experience in the areas of volunteer programming, training, program development and/or planning, and coordinating activities and events;
  • Experience working with volunteers in community-based programs or initiatives desirable
  • Work, volunteer, or internship experience in a non-profit setting preferred;
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and collaboratively with a diverse range of groups and individuals, while also being able to work independently when necessary;
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines, and to work in an environment with frequent interruptions;
  • Solid understanding of the value of volunteers and volunteer management best practices;
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing, including the ability to comfortably speak in front of small and large groups;
  • Able to travel frequently to area program sites and other BRAFB locations

Salary: $38,000 – $42,000 (commensurate with experience)
