Job Description

Summary

This 20-hour a week Term Limited Temporary (TLT) or Special Duty Assignment (SDA) is expected to last two years but may be extended based on business needs.

King County’s Department of Local Services (DLS) Director’s office is seeking a Vashon Community Van Coordinator to provide public outreach and recruitment of riders and volunteer drivers for the Vashon Community Van program. This role requires administrative and project support including trip scheduling and coordinating, service performance tracking and reporting on ridership and usage. Interaction with the organization at all levels, external partners, and public speaking are also key elements of the role. This position will provide residents with information about this service and other public transportation options available in their community.

Community Van is a rideshare pilot program by King County and participating communities to provide a new way to share the ride. This is the latest in a series of unique Community Connections services Metro is piloting in communities throughout King County. These services are designated to provide residents with customized options for getting around when bus service is not available or does not meet their needs.

The ideal candidate for this role will be a self-starter who has excellent interpersonal skills, a keen attention to detail, strong time management, and a commitment to equity and social justice. This candidate can work well independently and with a variety of audiences.

Job Duties

To be considered for this opportunity, you must at a minimum, demonstrate knowledge, skill and ability to:

Applying equity and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees. In this role, you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values, behaviors, and practices to all aspects of the work.

  • Promote transportation options in the community;
  • Serve as a first contact for community members with transportation option questions;
  • Attend local events, engage in outreach to individuals and community groups, and make presentations to various audiences to promote transportation options;
  • Leverage existing channels of communication to promote transportation options; i.e., social media such as Facebook, Twitter, etc., King County and partner websites;
  • Ensure informational materials such as brochures and comment cards, are available at Hubs and provide materials to public service agencies and other agencies that serve populations in the area who may be dependent upon public transportation;
  • Provide monthly and quarterly progress reports to King County Metro and other partners;
  • Recruit volunteer drivers;
  • Responsible for maintenance and up-keep of the Community Van.
  • Duties include but are not limited to monthly inspections of the van, working with Metro staff to schedule regular maintenance or emergency service, report any maintenance issues with the van or vandalism;
  • Wash and clean the van, fill the gas tank, and complete daily inspections of the van; Assist with fare collection, fare collection processes, and fare tracking;
  • Serve as a resource for driver questions on Community Van policies and procedures and dispense new information to drivers or policy or procedure changes that affect regular operations as it pertains to driving and rider services;
  • Provide new drivers with a walk-around van orientation; ensure that drivers have completed Rideshare Operations driver orientation;
  • Train drivers to use accessible van equipment; Provide drivers with trip information, pick-up points, and rider information;
  • Apply equity and social justice principles as a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County employees;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

We are looking for candidates who have: 

  • Strong customer service etiquette;
  • Public speaking and interpersonal skills;
  • Strong organizational techniques;
  • Program management supporting skills;
  • Problem-solving, conflict resolution and troubleshooting skills;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills;
  • Are skilled in communicating with people of diverse backgrounds;
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines;
  • The ability to work independently AND in a team setting;
  • Skill in reading and interpreting applicable documents specific to position assignment;
  • Able to navigate Microsoft Outlook, Excel and SharePoint programs.

Necessary special requirements:

  • A valid Washington State divers license, or the ability to obtain one before hire.
  • Drivers must be able to meet driver criteria for passenger transport and will be required to undergo a Motor Vehicle Report Driving Record review at time of hire.

Supplemental Information

Currently we are filling 1 Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) and/or Special Duty Assignment (SDA) for current King County Career Service employees who have passed their probationary period. Current King County employees must have permission from their supervisor to be eligible for the Special Duty assignment.

Pay upon SDA placement: Current employees selected for SDA will be compensated based on the provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement or Master Labor Agreement for their base assignment if applicable.

This recruitment may be used to fill vacancies for up to 6 months. Including career service, special duty assignments, STT and TLT opportunities.

WORK SCHEDULE: 

  • A typical work week is 20 hours, Monday – Friday.
  • Hours are flexible and will be determined in advance with supervisor.
  • Occasional weekend or evening hours may be required.
